Take a deep breath. That’s oxygen, of course, but it’s mostly nitrogen — 78% nitrogen, in fact. Our human bodies can’t do anything with that nitrogen, and neither can most plants. But that is changing in Barney Geddes’ lab at North Dakota State University. This new evolutionary event involves bacteria evolving to change nitrogen into a natural form of fertilizer, ideally reducing spending on nitrogen fertilizers and alleviating harmful effects on the environment. Richard ’65 and Linda Offerdahl are passionate NDSU benefactors — and their support has expedited the research timeline. What an incredible connection opportunity for these North Dakota State University students and some wonderful industry partners! 👏🤘
When people ask me why I moved back to North Dakota, I always say that there is a magic to this place and these people I haven’t found anywhere else. When Amanda Susag and I began dreaming about Upward Bound participants taking industry field trips I remember her being unsure if industry would be excited to host students for a visit. I assured her – they would! AND… we filled every field trip in ONE DAY of asking. My heart burst every time I got an email update about a visit. These experiences are where students get the opportunity to dream about their future! Here are some of my favorite moments the students got to experience on their industry field trips! · At Gate City Bank students learned about resiliency and attended a presentation on Financial Literacy that focused on credit and budgeting. · At Border States students did an assessment of their communication styles and ended the day with popsicles on the outdoor wellness track. · At Northrop Grumman students got to see the room used for flight simulation and learned how the software is the same as what is used in the game Fortnight. · At Cardinal Glass Industries students loved learning how profit-sharing trickles bonuses down to everyone at the company and at Marvin they got a hands-on lesson in window building and had a friendly competition to see who could build a window the fastest. From all of us here at NDSU, thank you for “rolling out the red carpet” for our students and treating their visits with such intentionality and excitement. We have THE BEST industry partners. At 5 foot 2 inches, former NDSU College of Engineering dean Joe Stanislao is small in stature, but big in ambition. A first-generation American born of Italian immigrants, Joe’s commitment to education led him to an impressive 57-year career at five different universities. What’s different about North Dakota State University? “Of all the schools I’ve been associated with, NDSU was the one that gave me the most exciting opportunities to express myself professionally as well as personally,” Joe said. Read about Joe’s background and career, his methods of increasing enrollment, and his genuine support of engineering students in the NDSU Foundation Magazine story “Component Parts: The Making of an Engineer’s Legacy”: https://lnkd.in/gJWMU583

Today NDSU leaders, state legislators, donors, community members and other NDSU supporters celebrated the significant milestones of the groundbreaking of the Bolley Agricultural Laboratory and the dedication of the Peltier Complex. The Bolley Agricultural Laboratory, named after pioneer Henry L. Bolley, will be one of the largest capital projects in NDSU history, supporting research in plant pathology, agronomy, soil science and more. Thanks to the $87 million from the North Dakota Legislature and $3.6 million in philanthropic funds, construction begins this summer. The Peltier Complex, a state-of-the-art facility, will enhance research and education in food science, meat science and related fields. This facility is made possible by a $70 million legislative appropriation and generous support from the Peltier family and other donors. Thank you to all who came to show their support today. These new facilities underscore NDSU's role as a leader in innovation and growth in agriculture, the state's largest economic sector. 🌾🚜 #NDSUAgriculture #ResearchUniversity NDSU Foundation NDSU Agriculture
