"Many people still think about trauma & PTSD as a scarlet letter: once you experience it, there is no way back to a good or 'normal' life. If we bring more awareness to PTSD and its treatments, we can help fight these myths." ❤️ Thank you so much to Behavioral Health Tech and Solome Tibebu for highlighting this reality of trauma and PTSD and many more in honor of PTSD Awareness Month! https://lnkd.in/eWnT2cs3

June is PTSD Awareness Month, and headlines have been flying around about MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, which was recently voted down by the FDA Advisory Panel. While we are always excited by new breakthroughs in clinical innovations for PTSD and trauma, we wanted to take this opportunity to level-set on a few key points: 🤝🏼 The biggest issue in PTSD, in our eyes, is one of access: 10% of people in the US will develop PTSD and 80% of them will never access treatment. Our work is in helping these survivors know effective treatment and healing are possible now. ❤️🩹The clinical help that trauma survivors need exists today: there are dozens of effective treatment options for people with PTSD that can avoid re-traumatization, offer affordable alternatives, and promote equally (if not more) successful recovery. ♀️PTSD is largely a women’s health issue — the majority of trauma survivors are women who’ve endured domestic or sexual violence — and the MDMA research discounted the testimony and safety of women who developed suicidal ideation and suffered sexual assault during the trials. We must vet new treatments through the lens of patient safety to make sure all trauma survivors are protected & safe. 💡Although the future of MDMA-assisted therapy remains to be seen, healing is possible for trauma survivors without it. Cognitive Processing Therapy, Nema’s main treatment, leads to recovery in 90% of patients and other evidence-based approaches including Prolonged Exposure and EMDR are also highly effective. In the wake of this news, we are reminded of our mission at Nema: to help trauma survivors find lasting peace & healing from PTSD. We have confidence in the evidence-based treatment we provide and the inherent strength of survivors — our work is in finding them and instilling hope that there are brighter days ahead. ☀️

Nema, in its early days, made a promise to ourselves and each other: that our work around allyship is more about what we do and less about what we say. This Pride Month, we invite allies to simply check on your queer loved ones and learn about the tremendous trauma they endure. LGBTQIA+ folks are more than 2x more likely to develop PTSD at the hands of sexual abuse, hate-related violence and homicide, verbal harassment, bullying, community violence, and medical discrimination. Josh Edmonson (he/they), our Patient Coordinator, bravely shared these beautiful and at moments heartbreaking words with us on Slack and we felt they needed to be out in the world, too. 🏳️🌈 "Tomorrow is the first day of LGBTQ+ Pride Month — a month that is often crowded with companies faking their support of the queer community, rainbow flags as far as the eye can see with no meaning behind them, and many negative narratives being spewed about the queer community. It is also a time to remember and showcase the love this community has within it and that we share with the world. The queer community is essential to life as we know it, specifically with the contributions to today's society from QTPOC. Queer folks are some of the most resilient people — however this resilient trait is something we have had to step into because of the trauma we are subjected to frequently. We struggle with higher rates of PTSD and suicide than heterosexuals. We struggle with bullying and physical violence at alarmingly high rates. We also face medical trauma and stigma, which pushes queer people away from trusting medicine and healing. PTSD is difficult to manage for folks and the access to treatment like ours at Nema is not always accessible. Our treatment saves lives and I am so grateful we offer our services in a densely queer population such as NYC and surrounding areas. We have seen a number of patients here who are seeking treatment due to trauma pertaining to their sexual orientation and identity. We have helped the community heal. This Pride, I am going to be sharing more with my friends about PTSD treatment and the benefits it can have on their overall health. I'll be reaching out to LGBTQ+ organizations to offer information on our program and PTSD treatment in general. I find this article helpful with spelling out all the ways in which the community can develop PTSD and the different types of traumas we face: https://lnkd.in/eeSTFK5R. Maybe it will be helpful to some of you if you have ever wanted to learn more ways you can support the queer community and the unique challenges we face." 💜

Hi 👋 we’re Nema, a survivor and doctor-led clinic focused on treating trauma & PTSD. We’re dedicated to providing treatment for lasting peace to those who develop PTSD after enduring or witnessing a trauma, defined as a life-threatening injury or event such as car accidents, mass shootings, physical or sexual assault, or domestic violence. We primarily use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which is proven to be the most effective treatment by helping trauma survivors think differently about what they went through, themselves, and the world. Here is a little bit more about CPT: ❤️🩹CPT, while rooted in the ethos of CBT, is specifically designed to treat PTSD. The therapy is centered around  "stuck points”, or painful trauma-related beliefs that one may hold. CPT focuses on challenging and reshaping the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of a survivor to alleviate PTSD's grip and allow for integration of healthier beliefs into one’s daily interactions. 📅 CPT occurs across 10-12 weekly sessions, each spanning approximately 60-90 minutes, grounded in a structured protocol for uniformity and effectiveness. 💡 CPT embraces a variety of techniques including Socratic questioning and cognitive restructuring to navigate and reshape negative thought patterns. This aids in the processing of emotions and crafting strategies to manage distressing symptoms towards healing and restoration. CPT is proven to be the most effective treatment for PTSD, but when and if it (rarely) doesn't help someone reach healing, we also enlist Prolonged Exposure, or PE. 👁 PE helps gradually expose patients to memories related to their trauma and the emotions the event raises for them. The hope is that as PE gently and safely exposes patients to memories of their trauma and reminders of it, they learn that their triggers are not dangerous and do not need to be avoided. Their PTSD symptoms slowly dissipate as they start to feel safer in the world. If you, a patient, or a loved one are concerned about trauma or PTSD, you can sign up for a free 20-minute call with Nema to start the healing journey at nemahealth.com.

At Nema, we’re dedicated to helping trauma survivors find lasting peace — and there is a lot of work to do. 83% of U.S. adults have been exposed to a traumatic event, defined as a life-threatening event such as physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, car accidents, and mass shootings. When prolonged symptoms turn into PTSD, early intervention and care is critical. So what are the telltale signs of PTSD? 💭 Intrusive thoughts & flashbacks: recurring, involuntary reliving of the traumatic event ⛔ Avoidance: Sidestepping situations, places, or people reminiscent of the trauma  🤔 Negative alterations in thoughts & mood: A profound shift in thought patterns and mood  🚨 Hyperarousal & persistent alertness: An ever-present state of heightened alertness caused by your fight-flight-freeze response being constantly activated Trauma can inflict emotional scars and profoundly alter the way one perceives the world and themselves — which usually show up in PTSD symptoms. Treatment and seeking professional support is crucial to find peace. Nema, through our evidence-based virtual PTSD treatment, is here to support. ❤️
