OceanX is a bold new mission combining science, tech, and media to explore our oceans and bring them back to the world.

About us

OceanX is a mission to explore the unseen ocean, map uncharted areas of the world, observe rare deep-sea creatures, pursue scientific and medical breakthroughs, and then bring all of these wonders back to the wider world through cutting-edge media. Check out #OceanXplorers, an epic six-part underwater adventure series releasing Aug 18 on National Geographic, Disney+ and Hulu. This mission will take place aboard the most advanced science and media vessel ever built, OceanXplorer, building on the legacy of OceanX’s current marine research vessel, OceanXplorer. OceanXplorer features state-of-the-art onboard dry and wet marine research labs, cutting-edge media equipment and a top-of-the-line production and media center, manned and autonomous deep-sea submersibles and helicopters and drones. OceanXplorer's filmmaking capabilities have been developed in consultation with filmmaker and ocean explorer James Cameron, and the ship has been designed by Hollywood’s leading studio production engineers. ORCA SURPRISE. We’ve kicked off leg three of our mission in Indonesia and are very excited to have a new group of scientists aboard. We had an unusual sighting of Orca this past week, which is not common to see here in Indonesia. Let us know in the comments why you think they could be in this area. It's been a beautiful week full of megafauna and amazing sights in Indonesia as we continue our research mission. During one of our sub dives, we even got to experience the "flashback phenomenon". This is when bioluminescent creatures from the deep will mimic flashes of light back at us. We're also running our water samples through a DNA sequencer onboard OceanXplorer to learn more about all the creatures that have passed through these waters. Which ocean creature's DNA do you think we will find? Expedition organized in partnership with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia, Kemenko Bidang Kemaritiman dan Investasi, the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI).

This week in Indonesia was a megafauna bonanza off the west coast of Sumatra. Not only did we come across a huge sixgill shark but also an elusive Omura's whale. BRIN scientist Dr. Ofri Johan has been studying all the unique coral in the region. Expedition organized in partnership with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia and the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI).

OceanXplorer has had an exciting week breaking records and welcoming aboard new local scientists as we carry on with our mission in Indonesia of the west coast of Sumatra. Our ROV, which we affectionally call Chimaera, completed its deepest dive to date, reaching an incredible depth of over 4,700 meters. We've continued to encounter breathtaking megafauna as we survey the region so enjoy some of our favorites in this mission update.
