On April 9, at the annual Sea-Air-Space exposition, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro released the 2024 Naval S&T Strategy, which serves as "sailing directions" for strengthening collaborative relationships to accelerate delivery of innovative solutions to the US Navy and United States Marine Corps. The Strategy aligns with three primary principles established by SECNAV: Strengthening Maritime Dominance, Building a Culture of Warfighting Excellence and Enhancing Strategic Partnerships. I work in the field of Human Factors (People + Technology), and study applications of Cognitive Psychology.
Some of our current work (with Francisco Ortega, Chris WICKENS, Leanne Hirshfield, Joanna Lewis) is being funded by Office of Naval Research under Prepared Warfighter Portfolio of Natalie Steinhauser. This program review showcased some interesting and impressive research and development, and provided a terrific atmosphere to get to interact with some of the other performers and those interested from the Navy side. It was fantastic to get to be a part of it. https://lnkd.in/g66CbXZR

STEM is for everyone! Thank you, Office of Naval Research and Naval STEM! Your support enabled the HITES12 program at the Tickle College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, allowing Trenton Henderson and me to mentor and give four rising high school students valuable research experience. In one week, they learned to analyze the aerodynamic efficiency of formation flights using theories and CFD tools (e.g., Cadence Fidelity CFD and Pointwise, Inc.). Finally, thank you, Trenton, for your leadership! #stem #cfd #aerospace #utk #HITES12 #PreCollegePrograms #EngineeringFuture

Bravo Zulu to Bryson Potts, Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division mechanical engineer! Bryson volunteers as one of our #NavyLab’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (#STEM) mentors for future scientists and engineers, and he was featured in the latest Office of Naval Research International SeaPerch Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Competition article. The event featured more than 170 competing teams of elementary, middle and high school students from around the globe. Bryson competed in this event as a high school student and it drove his career. He and Joseph (LJ) Earnest, NSWC PCD mechanical engineer, are also transitioning into a more prominent role to plan and coordinate our regional SeaPerch competitions, and attending this international competition was a great way for them to learn how to improve our local program. Thank you for investing in our nation’s future, Bryson and LJ! #NAVSEA #scientists #engineers

In the field of DoD S&T, there is constant pressure to showcase successful transitions as proof that the risks taken by innovative scientists have led to advancements in capabilities and products. Six decades ago, trailblazers at the Office of Naval Research took a bold step by supporting George Bond and his team of aquanauts to demonstrate saturation diving and the ability of humans to live in an undersea habitat for 11 days through the launch of SeaLab1. Despite facing numerous challenges and close calls with death, the aquanauts survived and were even disappointed when unfavorable weather conditions cut their mission short of the planned 21 days. The sponsorship of the 60th anniversary of SeaLab1 by Deep, a company with the motto "making humans aquatic," represents a transition of the knowledge gained from SeaLab to the mission of Deep and underscores the importance of patience in claiming successful transitions from scientific pursuits.
Thanks to all of our amazing sponsors. July 3rd will be the last day to get your tickets, don't wait! https://lnkd.in/gKYaPkgS
