Following the recent announcement confirming that the Great Nile Migration in South Sudan is the largest land mammal migration on Earth, Geographical online magazine reported on what this means to the people of South Sudan and how this natural phenomenon has persisted during years of conflict in the region. The survey was done by African Parks in partnership with the Government of South Sudan and supported by The Wilderness Project. Boma Badingilo Jonglei Landscape (BBJL) in the southeast of South Sudan, is the setting for this migration. Approximately six million antelope, including white-eared kob, Mongalla gazelle, tiang and reedbuck move across the landscape into Gambella National Park in Ethiopia every year. In 2020, Fundación Biodiversidad, a non-profit NGO partner funded by Rainforest Trust, supported a group of twenty women to build capacity in agroecology through “productive backyards” to improve their food security. A year later, building on their success, the women pursued additional funding to plant a community-based forest restoration area along the Magdalena River bank of Colombia. These women have now planted 3,024 trees of 49 species over more than 25 acres and have completely transformed grasslands into a young, diverse forest. It's official – South Sudan hosts the largest land mammal migration on Earth! His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the Republic of South Sudan has announced the results of a comprehensive aerial survey of the Great Nile Migration, encompassing Boma Badingilo national parks and stretching to the White Nile. Each year, in an unmatched wildlife spectacle, approximately six million of white-eared kob, Mongalla gazelle, tiang and Bohor reedbuck move across this landscape and into Gambella National Park in Ethiopia. The migration illustrates the immense ecological importance of this ecosystem and the urgent need for its long-term protection. The survey results, combined with data from the collaring of hundreds of animals from multiple species, create a more detailed understanding of the ecosystem, which will help develop sustainable strategies for both the wildlife and the people who depend on it. The survey was conducted by African Parks in partnership with the South Sudanese Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism (Wildlife Generation SSD), with support from The Wilderness Project. In Valle del Cauca, Colombia, an additional 3,262 acres of tropical forest habitat are now under protection following a recent designation by the regional environmental authority, Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca! The expansion brings much-needed protections for over 130 bird species.
