Are you attending #GopherCon? #Rearc Principal Architect, Neil Primmer, is in Chicago at GopherCon this year running the GopherCon Challenge Series. 🎁 Contestants can win fabulous prizes in a series of logic, security, and programming challenges! 🎁 💾 This year's theme dials in to retro technology of the 80s and 90s and includes challenges such as "Sneakernet", where contestants must use provided 3.5" floppy disks and drives to score points, or "Call Me Captain", where contestants must generate a 2600hz tone to emulate phreaking techniques. 🏙 Joining Neil this year is Rearc's Senior Cloud Engineer Kurt Bomya, a first time GopherCon attendee, who has been helping with the Challenge Series as well. Check out his work on the "Carmen Sandiego's City Chase" series of challenges. 🗺 On Monday, July 8th, the Challenge Series will be located in the Community Roundtable room at the Marriott, at tables 12, 13, 17, and 18. Last week, #MLFlow added ✨Tracing✨. This is a way to answer "What is my LLM actually doing?" Tracing lets you see into your model chain the way a debugger lets see into code execution, and it makes troubleshooting LLM apps so much easier. At Rearc, it's given us new insight about what our compound AI systems like LLM chatbots are actually doing. This feature is integrated into Databricks, but any user of the open-source MLFlow library can get started with it today. David Maxson got his hands on Tracing just ahead of the official release, and his blog post provides a great guide on what it's good for, how to get started, and what we might expect in the future. My favorite keynote from #DataAISummit so far is Matei Zaharia's talk on Unity Catalog. Open-sourcing Unity Catalog continues Databricks's tradition of giving back to the OSS community, which is awesome to see. It's also hugely valuable for them in the long run. When we started talking to enterprise FinServ teams evaluating Databricks (before UC), their biggest blocker was the need for mature data governance. After UC, the biggest concern became the fear of vendor lock-in. With Open Source UC, first-class Glacier/UniForm support, and Lakehouse Federation, Databricks is making big strides in answering that concern.
