Don't forget tomorrow is World Down Syndrome Day-rock your socks! Down Syndrome Sensitivity 101 Here is a brief overview of terms and key things to keep in mind that most of us have never thought of before! In the U.S., the proper name of the condition is Down syndrome, not Down’s. “Syndrome” is not capitalized in this context. This is often abbreviated as Ds. The underlying condition that causes Ds is Trisomy-21. While most people have two copies of each of the 26 human chromosomes, people with Ds have three copies of chromosome 21. This is why World Down Syndrome Day is observed on 3/21. This is also why you’ll see 3-21 or 321 used in many contexts in awareness efforts. A blue and yellow ribbon represents Ds support. Most people with disabilities are sensitive to people-first language. This means that we would never refer to someone as a “Down syndrome kid” as it emphasizes their disability over their personhood. Instead, “person with Down syndrome” is preferred. Avoid describing the condition as “Down’s,” as in, “He has Down’s.” It’s also important to avoid the dreaded “R” word. While this word was used for many years to describe people with Ds at one time clinically, it became a derogatory term that is considered deeply offensive at worst, and willfully ignorant at best. Many people will inadvertently ignore those with disabilities, and talk about them or ask questions to other people with them as if the disabled person is incapable of understanding or communicating. If there is a reason to speak to someone with Ds, it’s OK and even preferred to politely address them directly. If they need extra help or direction, their companions will likely be sensitive to stepping in to help when necessary. You will more likely be able to communicate effectively with no additional help at all. It’s OK to ask questions! Don’t tell your kids “not to stare,” as it teaches them to avoid or be scared of those who are different. Instead, encourage them to say “hello” and discover what it is they have in common.
