A very nice feature on Rondo via Canary Media Inc.: Rondo’s heat batteries will soon be cleaning up factories in US, Europe. "... In Europe, Rondo last month won a commitment of 75 million euros ($80.6 million) from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, the Bill Gates–founded investment group and an early Rondo backer, along with the European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The funding will support projects at a chemicals plant in Germany owned by Covestro; at GreenLab, a green industrial park in Denmark; and at an undisclosed food-and-beverage processing facility. In the U.S., Rondo’s “heat batteries” — refractory brick blocks that can reach up to 1,500 degrees Celsius — started supplying heat to an ethanol plant in California last year. Under projects announced this year, the batteries are set to be installed in distilleries in Illinois and Kentucky owned by international spirits manufacturer Diageo and at a plastics recycling facility being built in Texas by chemicals giant Eastman — projects that are backed by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grants now being negotiated by the companies involved." https://lnkd.in/gibHMt6t

Breaking News: Rondo Energy announces €75M project funding with Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and the European Investment Bank. Three Rondo Heat Battery installations will decarbonize food, clean fuel, and chemical production across Europe. Today at the Breakthrough Energy Summit, Rondo Energy, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, the European Commission, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) announced €75 million in funding that will support three groundbreaking industrial decarbonization projects in Europe. Rondo will use the funding to expand its European presence and build projects delivering low-cost clean energy under long-term contracts. Each project has been optimized to capture low-cost intermittent energy from local and remote wind and solar resources, to deliver “drop-in decarbonization” for producers of food and beverage, clean fuel, and chemical production. The facilities will deliver low-cost, continuous, high-pressure, zero-carbon steam and power as a service. Rondo Heat Batteries (RHBs) combine century-old materials and cutting-edge automation to turn intermittent renewable electricity into the continuous, high-temperature heat and power required by industries. Drop-In Decarbonization for Covestro's Chemical Production: Covestro, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality polymer materials and their components, has selected Rondo to deliver clean energy services at a production facility in Northern Germany. An RHB100 will be delivering continuous steam powered by intermittent renewable energy, contributing to Covestro’s deep commitment to circularity and decarbonization. Heat battery replaces fossil fuels in GreenLab’s green industrial park: GreenLab is a pioneer green and circular industrial park in Denmark, that works to demonstrate how energy waste can be reduced in industry. Rondo will build a “clean utilities core” supplying the companies in GreenLab with green heat. An RHB100 powered by renewables will generate high pressure steam to drive a CHP steam turbine generator cycle, translating intermittent electricity into baseload heat and power for multiple companies at the park. One of the first companies in the park to benefit from Rondo’s heat battery will be using the green heat to produce low-carbon biogas, eliminating the use of fossil fuels in the process. This first installation will establish the performance, processes, and tools needed to expand the clean utilities core at GreenLab and to build other parks like this one powered by the wind and the sun. Decarbonizing Food & Beverage Production: Rondo will also build a third project that charges from on-site and off-site solar, delivering deep decarbonization for a European producer in the food and beverage sector, with further details to be announced soon. We're thrilled to announce that Rondo Energy is partnering with Eastman to deploy Rondo Heat Batteries (RHBs) at their molecular recycling project in Longview, Texas. Eastman is already a leader in building a circular economy. Rondo is excited to be joining their journey by helping to transform plastic waste into valuable materials while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “This can be a true game changer for providing low- or zero-carbon power for industrial processes,” Eastman's Neil Brown said. “Anywhere there are great needs for process heat — and Eastman uses a lot of heat to power our processes — thermal batteries can be a solution because you’re able to store heat for so long with so little loss. Another plus of building this new facility at an existing site is that if we run into challenges as we’re integrating the new thermal technology, we have backup steam and power systems in place to allow continued operations.” A big thank you to Eastman. Together, we're breaking new ground for clean energy and circular economy solutions! 🔗 Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/gi9WaFw9
