Sarpy County is the fastest growing county in the state (20%) and well outpaces national growth (7%). To support that growth and expand the tax base, the county needs proper sewer infrastructure that will keep up with demand. We greatly appreciate the collaboration between Sarpy County and the Cities of Bellevue, Gretna, La Vista, Papillion and Springfield to get this project planned, started, and operating. Centralized systems are public sewer systems. They treat wastewater in a single, centralized location. Sewers collect municipal wastewater from homes, businesses, and industries and deliver it to a treatment plant for processing. After wastewater is treated, it is reused or discharged to surface water or ground water. It is necessary for development to have an efficient sewer system. The Unified Southern Sarpy Wastewater System is designed to address the inability for Sarpy County to grow. The SCCWWA was formed in 2017, when Sarpy County and the cities of Bellevue, Gretna, La Vista, Papillion and Springfield approved an interlocal agreement to build the Unified Southern Sarpy Wastewater System, a sanitary sewer system to serve the southern portion of Sarpy County. In 2020, we collaborated with the City of Omaha. We signed an agreement with the City of Omaha in 2020 to treat the region’s wastewater. In 2022 we broke ground on the project. The first phase of the construction began to progress, building the 'backbone,' of the sewer system which will pave the way for development. The project continues to progress, with an estimated conclusion in 2024. We anticipate $3 billion in economic impact. Right now, Sarpy County is cut in half by a ridgeline. Sarpy is the fastest growing county in the state (20%) and well outpaces national growth (7%). To support that growth and expand the tax base, the county needs proper sewer infrastructure that will keep up with demand. Development has been hindered due to a lack of a sewer system structure on the southern part of the ridgeline. The SCCWWA is developing that sewer system, which is called the Unified Southern Sarpy Wastewater System. We make sure that the sewer system going into the ground today will take care of you and your community tomorrow.
