Shrinking time between disaster and recovery.

About us

SBP is a national social impact organization dedicated to empowering communities to shrink the time between disaster and recovery by rebuilding homes, increasing preparedness and resilience, and improving systems to serve the needs of all Americans better. We take a holistic approach to combating natural disasters—increasing the readiness and resilience of communities before they happen and streamlining rebuilding and recovery after. SBP started months after Hurricane Katrina. Liz McCartney, a teacher, and Zack Rosenburg, a lawyer, left their homes in Washington, D.C., to volunteer to support the recovery effort in New Orleans. In March 2006, they co-founded SBP in the St. Bernard Parish southeast of New Orleans, where Katrina left 68,000 people homeless. Since those early years, hundreds of thousands of generous volunteers, AmeriCorps members, investors, donors, and tireless employees have helped SBP become a national disaster resilience and recovery leader. Utilizing the Toyota Production System and trained AmeriCorps members, SBP has rebuilt homes for more than 6,300+ families with the help of 150,000 volunteers in 14 communities across the U.S. and the Bahamas since 2006. 💙 AMERICORPS MONDAY 💙 SBP is excited to welcome Craven County Disaster Recovery Alliance back as an AmeriCorps placement site! CCDRA was a placement site back four years ago. An AmeriCorps member through that program who served in 2019-2020, Kristy Kulberg, is now CCDRA’s Director of Operations! She shares about her experience: “Hurricane Florence severely damaged my home with nearly 6 inches of flood waters and roof damage. The volunteers from another organization helped me find peace, begin recovery, build resiliency, and get back to being myself again. I wanted to pay that forward, so I began looking for a job in disaster recovery. The 10 months I served as an AmeriCorps member with SBP was wonderful. I will never forget meeting that first homeowner. She was so full of heartache, hopelessness, and the stress had clear impacts on her physical health and appearance. We were able to have her home repaired, and by the time it was complete, that homeowner had a new-found smile, was full of laughter, had the color back in her face, and a bright shine in her eye. I didn’t have to just hope her life could change…I was able to help her life change. It’s powerful. I never thought my life could be changed twice in a matter of a year…the first time, it dragged me to the depths of despair, and the second time, it found my new career.” We are hiring two AmeriCorps members to serve with CCDRA starting August 27. What if you didn’t have to wait years to repair your home after a disaster? SBP’s Recovery Acceleration Fund (RAF) is a replicable, scalable disaster recovery funding model to assist low-income homeowners who don’t have the means to repair or rebuild their homes on their own. By financing home repairs today and awaiting reimbursement, RAF can set a new standard for disaster recovery by quickly and predictably returning families to the affordable homes they already own. Learn more about RAF at https://lnkd.in/gJik8D7j or click the link in our bio.

✨ VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT ✨ In June we were fortunate to have the returning volunteer group, Shirts Across America, join us to help rebuild homes in New Orleans. Coming all the way from Seattle, Washington, these high school students took on the heat and humidity as they were determined to make a difference during their stay. Thank you volunteers!!
