We held our 2nd annual Service to School VetLink Summit at the University of Chicago from June 21-22, 2024! Day 1 of the Summit featured stories from student veterans on the impact points that have shaped their journeys from the military to higher education. "Don't self select out of top tier universities. As a Marine, we typically sell ourselves short (if not self deprecate). Your experiences, leadership, and perspective are valued.  1. USE S2S 2. Develop meaningful connections with current student veterans (What is campus culture like? Would you be a good fit? Financial Aid?)  3. USE S2S 4. Focus on authentic supplemental essays that describe your passions; link those passions to the university experience and how you'll take their degree into the world -and change it!  5. USE S2S 6. The S2S Vetlink Essay is an incredible addendum to your application. Describe your military experiences there. If able, link them to a broader purpose and intent post-uni.  7. "Success in applying to finish your degree or obtain additional higher education outside of the military really needs to start long before you begin the formal process of leaving the military. SFL-TAP, the military's formal program that guides Servicemembers in their transition to civilian life, is not set up to guide you through the admissions process. Studying for something like the MCAT takes months. Applying to medical school starts a full year before matriculation. Peer-to-peer mentorship helps pair you up with someone who has navigated what appears to be the murky waters and timeline of an admissions process.
