In April 2023, the talented mother/daughter team were flown to Manchester, United Kingdom, spending 15 hours on the gameshow set in front of a live studio audience! Rachael Greeney had been struggling with her weight since she was a young girl growing up in southeastern England. But that didn't stop her from achieving incredible things, like running the Chicago Marathon in 2019, even with 275 pounds on her 5'8" frame. "It took me seven and a half hours, but I finished!” "I finally reached a point where I had had enough. It was frustrating, so I started looking into surgical options," Rachael explained. After attending an informational seminar with BMI Surgery at Silver Cross, Rachael underwent gastric bypass surgery. In total, Dr. Brian Lahmann and his partners at BMI Surgery have performed over 10,000 weight loss surgeries at Silver Cross, which also offers a broad range of bariatric surgery care services, including inpatient care, post-operative care, outpatient follow-up care, and patient education. “I really liked that they had that support; they don’t just do the surgery and say, ‘See you later.’ Rachael has since completed several marathons! Our nationally recognized heart program – the Midwest Institute for Heart at Silver Cross Hospital – continues to achieve firsts. In the United States alone, more than 270,000 people are diagnosed annually with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (SSAS), which occurs when the aortic valve leaflets become stiff and thickened and have difficulty opening and closing. This makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the rest of the body. If left untreated, 50% of patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis can die from heart failure in as little as two years. Patients turn to TAVR - a minimally invasive, catheter-delivered procedure - to boost blood flow, allowing patients greater quality of life and return to their favorite activities. TAVR is also available for younger and active patients and those whose age or physical condition disqualifies them from open heart surgery. Recently, our Structural Heart team led by Drs. Francisco Yun, Ravi Ramana and Philip Alexander, became the first in Illinois to utilize the Evolut™ FX+ transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) system from Medtronic, a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgical aortic valve replacement. The technology is used for treatment of symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (SSAS) for patients across all risk categories (extreme, high, intermediate and low). This team also was one of the leading participants in the Edward Lifesciences Alliance x4 TAVR Trial, which also uses cutting-edge technology for the treatment of SSAS. 🌼Congratulations to Kaci Svornik, RN, of the Intensive Care Unit, our latest DAISY Award recipient, who was nominated by Dr. Erik Borncamp for her excellence, follow-up and work ethic while taking care of a very sick patient. “He had some serious injuries.” Dr. Borncamp wrote. "He could’ve crashed at any moment. But every interaction I had with her, she was calm, informative, fully aware of every aspect of his care, had excellent suggestions for tests or interventions. I can’t express how reassuring it was to know that his care was in her hands when I couldn’t be there.” Added Dr. Borncamp, “She’s smart, she anticipates problems, she’s constantly thinking about what she can do to better care for the patient. She speaks up for patient care. She has an excellent work ethic. She follows up on everything.
