Sustainably recycling since 1917.

About us

Sims Metal, division of Sims Limited, is a global metal recycler with operations that encompass the buying, processing and selling of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Our metal recycling operations are located across the United States, Australasia and the United Kingdom and comprise a network of processing facilities – many with deep-water port access supported by an extensive network of feeder yards. We provide customized recycling services to meet the individual needs of commercial and industrial scrap metal producers, and we buy ferrous metal from metal dealers, peddlers, auto wreckers, demolition firms and others who generate obsolete metal, and from manufacturers who generate industrial metal.

SITE SPOTLIGHT 🌟   Innovation leads the way to a greener future.   As a core value at Sims Metal, we commit to excellence in everything we do and champion continuous improvement. Our Long Marston facility in the United Kingdom is a great example of our ongoing innovation and focus on improving technologies to offer high quality products to our customers.   Examples of recent innovation at the facility include sensor and processing technology that will increase our throughput capacity at this site whilst also improving quality.   At this facility, we receive non-ferrous residue waste from other Sims Metal locations as well as external supplies, and further process this residue to create a cleaner stream of material. With around 1.5M tonnes of metal processed each year at Sims Metal sites across the UK, this site plays a crucial role in enabling us to provide a higher quality product to our global customers.    The top material processed at this facility includes residue from our shredders and WEEE operations. The goal of our Long Marston facility is to close the loop on our own processes to the extent possible, while at the same time providing our global customers with the highest quality products possible.   Find out more about Sims Metal 👉 www.simsmm.co.uk #SimsMetal #MetalRecycling #MetalSensorTechnology #NonFerrousResidueWaste

Lithium-ion batteries can cause fires and have quickly become the #1 cause of fires at recycling facilities 🔋🎇 This means the proper use, and more importantly, safe recycling or disposal of lithium-ion batteries and items that contain these batteries, is critical to protecting the health and safety of all those around us. Protecting our frontline recycling workers is an imperative, as these community members are often those most exposed to the risk of fires as a result of lithium-ion batteries being sent in recycling loads or thrown into garbage. For tips on how to safely manage end of life lithium-ion batteries visit the Call2Recycle website. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ed_S-8zW Remember: ➡ These batteries are in many different household items and are so small that they’re easily and often overlooked. ➡ Please check all items ready for recycling or disposal to ensure no batteries inadvertently are included in your recycling or thrown into trash. ➡ A single small battery can have enough charge to start a large fire in a metal recycling facility, materials recovery facility (MRF), a transfer station or a landfill. #lithiumbatterysafety #batteries #sustainability #recycling #circulareconomy

The electric arc furnace is an important step in our site’s transformation to a future hub of sustainable & complementary economic, environmental and social enterprises built on local and international partnerships. Today we are pleased to announce our 2nd scrap steel supply arrangement with Sims Metal NZ. A partnership that will see another large proportion of New Zealand’s steel scrap utilised locally (to manufacture steel products) rather than being shipped offshore. Sims Metal NZ operates nine scrap metal recycling centres across the country, where it turns scrap metal into raw materials for manufacturing operations both in New Zealand and around the world. “Scrap metal arrangements are a key pillar of making this landmark project a success. We’re excited to welcome Sims Metal NZ into the partnership and are very pleased we're on track to deliver this significant reduction in the country’s carbon emissions.” CE Robin Davies. #Steel #manufacturing #construction #nzmade #netzero #decarbonisation #scrapmetal #electricarc #recycledmetal #circulareconomy #designlife #sustainability #metalrecycling #SimsMetal #ScrapMetalRecycling

As we continue along our pathway to decarbonisation, Sims Metal is proud to share that we’ve partnered with Volvo Trucks to order our first electric heavy goods vehicle at the Newport end-of-life fridge facility located in the United Kingdom.    The new Volvo FE Electric 375 kWh battery model, charges with 100% renewable electricity and will save up to 40 tonnes of CO2e emissions each year! In addition to the emissions savings, the electric truck provides our drivers with a quieter and more comfortable driving experience, helping to reduce fatigue and provide a safer, heathier workplace.   This vehicle is currently in use at the Sims Metal, Newport end-of-life fridge facility and will facilitate the collection of refrigerators for recycling from our supplier network. The Newport facility is one of the UK’s largest fridge recycling centres, with a capacity for 750,000 units per year; at this site we process domestic and commercial refrigerators, air conditioning units and insulation panels to responsibly dispose of hazardous substances and recover metals for recycling.   The Volvo FE Electric joins the electric shear and the electric material handler we have recently installed at our Sims Metal site in Avonmouth, as well as other electric equipment installed across our business in the UK and globally. Sims Metal sites in the UK use 100% renewable electricity, in line with our target to achieve 100% renewable electricity use across all business divisions by 2025.   Learn more about Sims Metal 👉 https://lnkd.in/epSQRwAM   #SimsMetal #ElectricTruck #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #RenewableElectricity #CarbonEmissions #VolvoGroup Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East

Earth Day is one of the largest secular observances in the world; it is a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local changes.   Yesterday, our California team took part in its first Stockton Earth Day festival. This event was designed to promote a sustainable lifestyle ensuring that the Earth's resources are protected and shared responsibly for the well-being of all including our future generations.   “The event was a great success! We had the opportunity to engage with the community and raise awareness about the importance of metal recycling and the role that Sims Metal plays in making the world a better place,” stated Eric Or, Sims Metal's Non-Ferrous Supervisor for Stockton, CA.   A special thanks to Eric Or, Christopher Williams and Christopher Tandoc for representing Sims Metal and raising awareness about what we do to “create a world without waste to preserve our planet”.   Learn more about Sims Metal’s sustainability strategy 👉 https://lnkd.in/gT-QT-i   #InvestInOurplanet #EarthDay #EarthDayEveryDay #ClimateChange #Environment #Sustainability #TakeAction #SimsMetal #MetalRecycling #InvestInMetalRecycling #Recycling #NaturalResources #StocktonGreen #stocktonearthday #stocktonevents

Earlier today, our CEO, Stephen Mikkelsen and the Sims team were pleased to welcome New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy and the Australian Consul General, Heather Ridout AO, to Sims Metal’s North America headquarters.   Located at the Claremont Terminal, Jersey City and employing more than 230 employees, this operation “Claremont”, is our largest metal recycling facility globally, and one of our more than 70 facilities across North America.    At Claremont, we process over 90,000 end-of-life vehicles, as well as a large range of other ferrous and non-ferrous materials each year. The recycled metals we process at this facility are sent to customers across the United States, as well as exported overseas, primarily for use in steel mills, and aluminum and copper smelting.    The visit was a great opportunity to talk about the critical role of recycled metals in building more circular manufacturing supply chains and supporting decarbonisation. 👏♻️🌟   #SimsMetal #SimsLimited #CareersatSims #LifeatSims #WeAreSims #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #Sustainabilityleaders #Circulareconomy
