This summer, the preschoolers in room 202 have been making the most of our DNR-Certified School Forest. Our Care Coordinator, Kari White, shared, “I love that the teachers joined right in with the children! Seeing them all laying on their bellies is fantastic for shoulder stability and upper body strength, which are crucial pre-writing skills!” Research consistently shows that nature exposure is incredibly beneficial for children of all abilities. Being outdoors supports cognitive, emotional, and psychological development, ensuring every child is fully ready to learn. Interested in helping our School Forest thrive? Yesterday, we were honored to welcome Hennepin County District Commissioner Edelson to tour our Minnetonka site. With her extensive background in mental health, Commissioner Edelson understands the immense benefits of early, high-quality mental health care and intervention. We were thrilled to share our therapeutic, occupational, and speech therapy spaces, and provide a glimpse into our flagship Inclusive Early Childhood Education classrooms. "You're doing such important and great work here...very impressive!" she remarked to our Chief Advancement Officer, Maureen Walsh. We are confident that Commissioner Edelson will continue to advocate tirelessly for us and our families based on what she witnessed yesterday.

As she pursued her Master of Social Work degree, Bethany Presley came to St. David's for a clinical internship to build knowledge and experience serving children and families who have faced trauma or developmental and mental-health challenges. She learned far more about herself and her future practice than she expected, and loved it so much that she decided to stay! Spring is in full bloom, and our outdoor spaces at the Minnetonka Center are shining brighter than ever! A huge thanks to the incredible volunteers from Fluid Interiorswho prepared our Big Playground, Little Playground, and Outdoor Classroom for summer. Their hard work included refilling sandboxes, clearing drainage areas, spreading mulch, planting flowers and revitalizing unused sections. The children are thrilled with the results! As part of #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, our Chief Clinical Officer spoke with Esme Murphy of WCCO | CBS News Minnesota. She discussed strategies for professionals to recognize early signs of distress in children, as we help make early intervention the standard. Such signs of challenge can include behavior changes, aggressiveness, hyperactivity, mood swings or withdrawal. As St. David’s Center moves through a period of significant expansion, we are innovating approaches to support the mental well-being of more children and families, setting a foundation for lifelong resilience and success. #YouthMentalHealth #CommunityCare #StDavidsCenter #MentalHealthAwareness #ChildrensMentalHealth #EarlyIntervention https://ow.ly/lW5P50REYeL

As professionals, we understand the importance of adequate resources to accomplish our goals. Sadly, Minnesota’s children are facing a critical resource shortage for mental healthcare. Medicaid’s reimbursement rates cover only 60% of the costs, leaving agencies working extra hard to attract the professionals to stand with children and families. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we are advocating for crucial changes in Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement rates. Read our CEO, Julie Sjordal's take, and learn how you can support in our latest blog post: https://ow.ly/Arlj50RB15J Let's ensure no child must wait for the care they need. #StandWithMNKids #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportMNKids #LeadersForChange #MentalHealthAdvocacy #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
