A semester-long collaboration with engineering students and the physical therapy department at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, is widening the availability of accessible toys to children with disabilities. Engineering professor, David Schipf, says, "It’s important for these students to learn while they’re in school that they’re given a great opportunity to get an engineering degree with these skills that can be used to help a lot of people." The project of developing an electric toy car based on the needs of a Spokane child with a physical disability is just the beginning for Schipf's students. Future students will build on the prototypes of past classes to further develop the designs into functioning usable toys. We love to see this expansion of accessibility for children with physical and developmental disabilities, and know just how important it is for students of all abilities to be granted the same opportunities. At The Arc, we are always looking for ways to meet the needs of our clients through innovative solutions and support programming. https://lnkd.in/dJsFNej8

Beginning this summer, a new option for Uber users will make managing transportation for people with disabilities easier for caregivers. Uber Caregiver will allow users to coordinate, pay for, and monitor rides through three-way chat and real-time update features. Partnering with commercial health insurers, individuals will also be able to use available benefits for medical appointments and grocery deliveries. Caitlin Donovan, global head of Uber Health, says that caregivers "provide essential care for millions of people, often at great personal cost, but they shouldn’t have to do it alone." We applaud Uber for their efforts in making strides in accessibility for caregivers and people with developmental disabilities alike! https://lnkd.in/e79Qr7Ac
