Come join us next week at Beauty Independent’s Dealmaker’s Summit in NYC on June 17-18! The summit brings together industry leaders and delivers best-in-class content with panels featuring a great lineup of speakers, including our very own Rich Gersten and Cristina Nuñez. Check out Rich’s panel on day 1 on the “State of Dealmaking”: “A year ago things seemed bleak in the beauty M&A world, forcing many bankers to vacation in one of the lesser Hamptons. Then came news that inflation was cooling, the worst of interest rate hikes was likely behind us, consumer spending remained stable and the much dreamt-about ‘soft landing’ was a genuine possibility in the US. By December, deal flow had come roaring back with a speed and intensity that rivaled the frothy days of early 2021. K18, Dr Dennis Gross, RoC, Barbara Sturm, The Honeypot Co., DS&Durga all traded in a 30 day period. From hair to skin, body and fragrance, it looked as if beauty dealmaking was back in full force and once again making headlines. But look under the surface, and one begins to see a more nuanced picture. From the types of assets traded to the multiples and exit conditions, things may be better, but definitely more tempered. In this panel we examine the latest rounds of dealmaking and what they portend for the future.” Cristina will be kicking off day 2 with a panel on “Early Stage Investing: Art or Paint by Numbers?”: “A decade ago, professional investment firms focused on early-stage beauty dealmaking were practically non-existent. Now, the space is ripe with firms who see the potential of getting in on the ground level of the next stratospheric success story—see K18. At the same time, rising costs and increased competition seem to have narrowed down strategic options for emerging brands—self-fund until seed, launch DTC, raise, enter Sephora/Ulta/Target, raise more, prove traction in maybe one foreign market, then call your favorite banker and hit “exit”. Is there now a proven playbook for early stage investing in beauty or is it still an art form? And if most VCs are essentially funding the same strategy, then how will they differentiate themselves and what does this mean for brands that don’t fit this playbook?” We can’t wait to see you all there!

Today's No Stupid Questions by Rachel Brown in Beauty Independent discusses the life expectancy of beauty brands and its implications for investors and M&A. The lifespan of beauty brands is generally shortening due to rapid market changes, consumer behavior shifts, access to capital, the rise of tik tok virality and the intense competition in the industry. Successful beauty brands often follow a lifecycle that includes initial growth, peak performance, and eventual decline or rebranding. Brands must innovate and adapt continuously to stay relevant. This trend has significant implications for M&A activities, as investors and larger companies often look to acquire emerging brands to stay ahead of market trends and consumer preferences. Strategic acquisitions can help established companies diversify their portfolios and enter new market segments. For emerging brands, being acquired can provide the necessary resources and support for further growth and expansion. However, the key to a successful acquisition lies in the integration process and maintaining the acquired brand's unique identity and customer base. Thanks for including me in the article. We are excited to share some new updates from True Beauty Ventures! Our recent closing on almost $70 million of commitments for our second fund demonstrates our resilience and adaptability in navigating a difficult fund raising market and an attractive beauty investment landscape. Despite this challenging market, we are nearing our Fund II target of $75 million and will hold our final close in June. We have been deploying Fund II since mid 2023 and the fund now has four investments and a fifth pending. I think the success of the raise is a testament to our track record, strategic vision and industry expertise. Reflecting on the TBV journey since launching in 2020 with my amazing co-founder, Cristina Nuñez, we have made remarkable progress, positioning ourselves as key players in driving innovation and growth in the beauty industry .... and this is only the beginning for us! Stay tuned for more exciting developments in 2024. I have been attending WWD Beauty CEO Summit since 2006. When i first attended, i had to sponsor in order to attend as an “investor” and I was the only investor in attendance. Fast forward to 2024 and the number of investors and investment bankers in attendance has materially increased. This was my first summit since starting True Beauty Ventures with my co-founder, Cristina Nuñez, and I am so proud of her and the brand we have both built in just 4 years. 16 brands later, we have come a long way. I also got to see Charlotte Palermino present and crush it as always! #beautyinvesting #beautyceosummit
