Advocacy in Action! Special thanks to all who were involved in this effort including our very own La Tonya Walker, MS, ICDVP!
In June, ICADV members from Guardian Angel Community Services, Harbor House , Quanada, WINGS Program, Inc., Mujeres Latinas en Acción, and staff from the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault joined advocates from across the country for The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) and National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV)'s Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C. It was a powerful opportunity to raise a collective voice on behalf of all survivors of gender-based violence in Illinois. Thank you to all the Illinois legislators who took the time to meet with us about the work to end violence in our communities. #AdvocacyInAction #BeTheGood #OneMissionOneVoice

Here at WINGS, we are encouraged this morning by the U.S. Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision that upholds a federal law prohibiting people with domestic violence orders of protection from having firearms. Listen to WINGS President & CEO Rebecca Darr's response to ABC 7 Chicago news: https://lnkd.in/e_UW-NJk Today’s decision reverses a troubling ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit that individuals had constitutional rights to possess firearms even if they had an order of protection against them. We know that if an abuser has access to a firearm, the risk of a domestic violence homicide increases 500%. The most dangerous time for survivors is when they are leaving an abusive relationship. Today’s ruling shows that survivors deserve protection and that their lives are valued. This common-sense action saves lives and makes our communities safer. If you or someone you know is in need of domestic violence services, WINGS is here for you. We can help assist with safety planning and resources to obtain an order of protection.
