Happy Rosie the Riveter day! In honor of Women's History Month, follow along with us this week as we recognize a few of the many incredible women who have shaped the manufacturing industry. Who better to begin with than Rosie herself, the most famous icon for working women.
The first mention of the name "Rosie the Riveter" came during the year 1943, during WW2, after a song was released about a woman working in an aircraft factory, and the name stuck. However, the iconic image we use of Rosie today was actually created the year before by J. Howard Miller for use on a poster within Westinghouse Electric Corporation's factories. The goal of this image at the time was to boost current female employee productivity, not recruit more women to the workforce.
As the poster resurfaced in the 1990s, this image with the message, "we can do it," took on a new meaning to become one of the most iconic images of women's empowerment, and still is to this day.
While there have been many speculations as to the true identity of Rosie, we celebrate all women who proved they could add as much value to the workforce as men and began the movement for advocating for women in the workforce.
