About us
YWCA Golden Gate Silicon Valley is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. For over 140 years, your YWCA has been meetings our community’s most pressing needs. We are one of the first multiservice agencies in the Bay Area, and have three priority service areas: (1) Empowering people & communities in healing from and preventing the trauma of violence, bigotry & racism; (2) Achieving solutions to homelessness for survivors of violence; and (3) Inspiring opportunity and economic security by closing the prosperity and education gap. Your YWCA is rooted in our Theory of Change which requires a continuum of response to the challenges of racism, sexism, and gender-based violence. That’s why we offer direct services to meet immediate needs, issue education to change hearts and minds in our local communities, and legislate advocacy to change the rules and systems in order to achieve greater equity and justice for all.

TAKE ACTION TODAY: On Wednesday, June 26, the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services Subcommittee released its FY 25 spending bill, eliminating the CDC Injury Center, including the Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) program and DELTA domestic violence prevention program. It is critical that advocates contact their members of Congress to stop these cuts and preserve prevention funding! Find contact information here: https://lnkd.in/gtghz89V Template Email and/or phone call script: I'm writing/calling to ask you to oppose the proposed $1.8 billion in cuts in the House FY 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations bill to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These cuts, which would slash the CDC’s funding by 22 percent, include the elimination of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (Injury Center). This cut would eliminate the Rape Prevention and Education Program (RPE) and DELTA domestic violence prevention grants. RPE has benefited from broad bipartisan support since this program was first authorized in the Violence Against Women Act of 1994. RPE provides the backbone of sexual violence prevention in our country. DELTA is the only dedicated federal funding source for the primary prevention of domestic violence. Eliminating these programs will have devastating impacts on states, communities, young people, families, rape crisis centers, and survivors.

🚨 NEW: Landmark Advisory on Firearm Violence 🚨 U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy at U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a historic Advisory declaring firearm violence in America as a public health crisis. This critical move acknowledges the devastating impact of gun violence on our communities. bit.ly/3VH9L84 Addressing firearm violence is crucial to reducing the epidemic of intimate partner violence. By recognizing this critical link, we can work together to create a safer, more equitable society for all. As one of the largest providers of safety and support services for survivors of intimate partner violence, YWCA knows firsthand the dangers that firearms pose for women, children, and families. As YWCA USA CEO Margaret Mitchell said, "We are grateful for the Surgeon General’s attention to this critical issue." Let’s amplify this crucial conversation and demand action to address the root causes of violence! Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for #SafetyForAll. This is big win for survivors and organizations that provide support services! Thank you to the #CALeg for ensuring this funding in the #CABudget and kudos to the many organizations and individuals who have spent months advocating for this funding protection. While this is a happy moment, it's essential that we continue to strive for consistent funding!
The #CALeg and Governor Newsom included $103 million in one-time funding to support Crime Victim Services in the #CABudget for 2024-2025. While this funding props up the safety net for survivors, we will continue our work to secure consistent funding so survivors won't need to bear the burden of demanding funding after trauma.
