Then you have seen our CREW summer 2024 interns!   The YWCA Central Alabama (@ywcacentralal) Family Resource Center of Woodlawn is hosting our 13th year of the CREW (Creating Responsible Educated Working teens) program. Our beloved CREW teen interns are halfway through their 4-week program, and they are learning valuable life and career skills, such as time management, job interview strategies, and budgeting.   We'd like to thank all of our terrific community partners for hosting and mentoring our hardworking, dedicated CREW! The Board of Directors of YWCA Central Alabama is delighted to announce that RaSheda Workman has been elected CEO of the organization, effective August 12, 2024.  Workman says, “Improving quality of life for underserved and marginalized communities has been the hallmark of my professional career. With more than 20 years of success across the nonprofit and government sectors, I am beyond thrilled to serve Birmingham and surrounding communities as the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for YWCA Central Alabama.”  Currently serving as the Executive Director of Government and Community Relations at Stillman College, Workman has also worked alongside Rep. Terri Sewell as her Financial Director/Executive Director, and Former Rep. Artur Davis as District Policy Advisor/Outreach Coordinator. Most recently, she was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to serve as an executive committee member of the Alabama STEM Council. Workman has also served as an Adjunct Professor and Director of Community-Based Partnerships at The University of Alabama, Director of Outreach at HERO Family Resource Center, and taught middle and high school science in Hale County, Alabama. Workman has an extensive background in fund development, strategic planning, and a lifelong understanding of what it means to be an active, effective leader in her community. Workman has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stillman College and a Master of Arts, Health Studies from The University of Alabama. The YWCA is excited to welcome her to the team! We’d like to thank Alecia Jones at AMJ HR Consulting, our search committee chaired by Leigh Haver, and its members Lajuana Bradford, Leigh Davis, Iris Fisher, Judge Laura Petro, Rena Ramsey, and Board President, Holly Stiles.

When the 8th Avenue Branch of the YWCA Central Alabama was established in 1912 with more than 800 women and girls, it marked the beginnings of a history-making chapter by becoming one of the first of its kind in the National Association when it formally affiliated with the YW in 1932. As a result of this union, Black and white women were able to communicate with each other.
