This 20-year follow up report reveals that while rates of uninsured have declined, we have not yet reduced health disparities in the United States. Until we recognize the multi-layered impact of community assets, politics/legislation/health policy, systems of care, healthcare provider and individual factors and accordingly implement multi-level approaches with measurable accountability across each layer as well as make visible the invisible, change will continue to move slowly.

In case you missed it, our Chief Executive/Founder was quoted in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) Maternal Health Alliance Compendium, released earlier this year, in reference to PUSH’s mission and working together to mitigate the maternal health crisis. “The mission of PUSH is to provide a trusted partnership and support system for women, moms, and families through all phases of pregnancy, including pre-conception and postpartum. Our program is built on the foundation of Community Health Workers with continued growth as an integrated approach to care. This consists of CHWs, doulas, midwives, and public health practitioners working collaboratively with clinical and medical providers. One of the challenges that we have experienced is connecting with the hospital system. The Commonwealth Fund released a new report with alarming statistics on health disparities in the U.S. Even in states considered to have high health care performance, such as Rhode ​Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, the report found stark disparities. It ​called out that white and Asian residents had the best health outcomes. The report calls for several policy initiatives with consideration including reducing barriers to health care coverage, access to Medicaid, and bolstering support for addressing social needs. Reflections on Public Health Connects: "RX For a Lonely Nation" 05/29 Today we had the Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy on Public Health Connects. I am so proud of our communications team. -This was our first time in front of a live audience, so everything had to run perfectly and without issue. The pressure was on! -Not only did the team produce the show, but we also supported with onsite photography and social media. -The team provided media availability with Red Eagle Soaring, Faisal Khan, Dr. Umair Shah, and Dr. Vivek Murthy with King 5, Komo, KOUW, and Seattle Times. -In addition to our legacy media partners, we invited Indigenous media outlets for the first time. This was a strong step forward in a multi-year effort toward a more inclusive media strategy. We were challenged in areas of media inclusivity, working seamlessly and simultaneously together in a high-stake environment, running several different communications systems (Video Production! Event planning! Photography! Media! Social Media!) And the team was marvelous in every way. It's an important message, and I am grateful that we had the opportunity to share this message with so many. I think I would be remiss to mention that this was a multi-year effort that culminated in one event. And what I mean by that, is that building out a production like Public Health Connects takes an ocean of planning and coordination. I think of the many weeks of voluntary training that the team did, learning how to run the camera equipment, how to set up lights, running sound, and where to place the shots. The unwavering support and trust we have from leadership who supported our vision. Positive energy, curiosity, and troubleshooting is essential in building out a system like this, especially one that was brand new for the agency. I considered naming the many thousand steps it took put all of these pieces together in this post, but LinkedIn has a word limit, and I would need many several times over to capture them all. I do want to acknowledge the deep work that Kristi Hughes, MIKE K KROESEN, Tim Schlender have done to make this a reality. My 3.5 years of #clinicaleducation failed to prepare me to care for the unique needs of the #lgbtq community. I completed graduate school and residency just 7 years ago. While many clinical training programs have since instituted #lgbtqhealth content, most established #clinicians didn’t receive the benefit of these new trainings. This ✨ One to Watch Wednesday ✨ I’m highlighting a #startup that focuses on filling the gaps in traditional #medicaleducation, ensuring that practicing providers come up to speed on key issues in LGBTQ+ health. Happy #O2WW to Violet! The Problem: 🏳️‍🌈 88% of LGBTQ+ people believe that their sexual orientation affects the type of health care they need, but 52% fear a negative reaction if they come out to their provider (Wilson, et al., 2016). 🙅🏽 Some providers, particularly those who are not LGBTQ+ themselves, have the opposite view. In hospice care, for example, providers view a patient’s sexual orientation and gender identity as “private” and “irrelevant” to their care (Cloyes, et al., 2022). 📚 As of 2009-2010, U.S. medical schools included just 5 hours of curriculum on LGBTQ+ health care needs. As of 2020, programs had increased these training time by just 2.22 hours per year (Nowaskie & Patel, 2020). 🏥 Medical trainees are still woefully underprepared to address the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. While many are more aware of the unique needs of queer patients, most feel that their clinical skills lag behind their awareness. The Solution: Training in LGBTQ+ #culturalcompetency improves providers’ knowledge and skills in LGBTQ-specific issues, and it improves their attitudes and behaviors when interacting with queer patients (Yu, et al., 2023). 💜 Violet has developed a comprehensive platform to provide this training. They offer high-quality #continuingeducation on LGBTQ-specific health issues to bring providers up to speed. 🌈 Their trainings include tracks on #BIPOC communities; lesbian, gay, and bisexual people; and trans and gender non-conforming (GNC) individuals. 📊 The Violet dashboard provides Inclusivity Analytics to help health care organizations track the cultural competency of providers throughout their entire network. 🤝 Violet’s #inclusivecare matching technology helps LGBTQ people connect with providers who are properly trained and prepared to care for their unique needs. ✅ Violet’s Benchmarks help standardize the measurement of provider cultural competency so patients know exactly how well-prepared their providers are. I look forward to continuing my own education in LGBTQ+ care and advocacy, and I’m grateful for companies like Violet who are making inclusive care more accessible for patients and providers. Indeed a turning point for women's health. I am not a political person, but this is something I can proudly support. Very proud of my friends Liz Powell, Jodi Neuhauser, and Candace McDonald for launching this Women's Health PAC who have the support of thousands of women in the healthcare industry. With more money, research, information, innovation, funding, and focus on women's health... everyone wins. Including men. Not to mention the community impact, especially rural facilities, as mentioned here.
