85% of business leaders agree a well-functioning democracy is essential to U.S. capitalism, but 78% are concerned about the state of democracy in the United States today. That's according to a recent report from the Leadership Now Project, a bipartisan, pro-democracy group of more than 400 business leaders, which warns of growing political instability in the U.S. ahead of the 2024 election and the potential risks to business. Via TriplePundit What are your companies and business leaders doing to help protect our democracy? #leadership #elections Daniella Ballou-Aares Jennifer Stark Alix Lebec Ellen McGirt SHANNON WATTS Adaora Udoji Samantha Katz Lisa Witter McPherson Strategies

💡 Excellent perspective from Emma Hinchliffe in today’s The Broadsheet newsletter from Fortune on how Aishwarya Iyer’s communications career prepared her for her role as CEO of Brightland. ⭐️ A few highlights from the article: During her career in public relations and communications for brands including Lancôme and the tech and media business Whisper, Iyer “got comfortable with discomfort, the gray, and the unknown.” “I got used to two truths being true at the same time—you can have an amazing story you’re pitching, and it can be true that the timing is off,” she says. “I see that all the time as CEO—that I hold two things to be true. She credits her comms career for making it through the ups and downs of growing that business. “From a mental strength and fortitude perspective, comms was incredibly effective preparation,” she says.’ 🖐🏼 Beyond the skills it gave me to be a media and presentation trainer for my clients, I’ve found my own career in corporate communications incredibly helpful in running my business, Brighton Media: - I’m very comfortable switching gears at a moment’s notice, which is often necessary when you wear many (or all!) the hats at the company you lead - I know how to succinctly and clearly explain my selling proposition and differentiators - I’m keenly aware that reputation is everything - And as Iyer also touched on, I’ve always lived with “discomfort, the gray, and the unknown.” ✏️ Communications pros-turned-business owners, what am I missing?

Individuals want more than to be talked at; they want an authentic connection and two-way conversation with brands, businesses, and organizations that they support. The days of broadcasting one message to a general audience are coming to an end. Individual and authentic messaging segmented by audience is what will set brands apart from their competitors.

Are the tools of journalism applicable to #corporate communications? Without a doubt. I recently had the opportunity to discuss three of those tools, and how to apply them, at a gathering of comms professionals from @Method Communications, @Sling&Stone, @Harvard and other teams from our @VCCP family. I’d love to hear about other skills from #journalism you think are applicable to helping companies tell their best stories in authentic, media-genic ways. Comment below!

The essence of genuine engagement in today's public sphere is not merely about being heard, but about remaining authentic amidst a sea of loud and conflicting voices. At Moxie Strategies, we uphold a quant-first approach because we believe that authenticity isn't just about the message, but how you substantiate it. Check out my ROI-NJ piece where I delve into how quantitative analysis empowers organizations to stay true to their core values while effectively engaging with their audiences. This method helps us navigate through the noise and focus on what really matters—authentic connections and tangible outcomes. Read on to see how a data-driven strategy can make a real difference.

Great insights from the Association of National Advertisers' SVP of brand and media Greg Wright during his #webinar presentation, "Driving LGBTQ+ Inclusive Marketing and Mid-Pride Check-in." More Than Just Pride: 365 Days *97% of inclusive marketers run campaigns year-round *Consistent, authentic support is key *Key LGBTQ+ events/dates outside of June (e.g. National Coming Out Day, Transgender Awareness Week). The Untapped Potential of LGBTQ+ Media *Only 34% of marketers currently utilize LGBTQ+-owned or targeted media. *LGBTQ+ media has a rich history of community-building, advocacy, and shaping public perception. *Targeted LGBTQ+ campaigns can generate almost twice as much purchase intent among LGBTQ+ consumers than mass-market campaigns. To achieve and maintain truly authentic relationships, brands must align their purpose with consumer values, engage stakeholders, craft compelling narratives, continuously evaluate and adapt strategies, and admit to their mistakes. In essence, being authentic means not only stating values but also demonstrating them through actions, fostering trust, loyalty, and meaningful engagement. #AuthenticRelations #BrandTransparency #ConsumerEngagement #BrandAuthenticity #BrandPurpose #PublicRelations #Connections https://lnkd.in/g2NqKtVq

"I already have a communications team." Is there a scientist among them? PR, social media, and UX/UI folx expertly build awareness and, depending on your product, bring consumers to your door. But when it comes to stakeholders -- I'm talking funders, regulators, policymakers, community groups, affiliates, enterprise clients -- they want to dig deeper. To check your math, so to speak. These are the people you create reports, briefs, white papers, and proposals for. The ones who want a sophisticated, persuasive document that show you're worth your salt. The ones whose impression of you will determine the impact your initiative will -- or won't -- have. Don't ask your Marketing Lead to proofread your white paper. She's trained in communications, not science and engineering. She'll do her best. But she'll end up skirting around the technical explanations. Or watering down their robustness. (And honestly, she has enough work already.) Don't miss the chance to make a lasting impression on those all-important stakeholders. Get a Science Interpreter. When you see the results (and the TIME you'll not be spending eeking out a report over the weekend) you'll be glad you did.

This month, I had the pleasure of joining other communications pros from across the country to learn from a few of the industry's top players in a 3-day virtual crisis communications workshop hosted by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The insights gained were invaluable, and I am excited to share some of the takeaways that struck me most as we continue to adapt our practice to address modern global communication challenges: 🌟 Define a 'North Star' in Every Incident 🌟 Understand your objective and align your strategy accordingly. Recognize how each communication can either advance or hinder the objective. This focused approach ensures that every action contributes to reaching our goals. 🗣️ The Story is Best Told by Those Close to It 🗣️ While having your CEO front and center may seem optimal, it’s crucial to assess whether they can authentically and empathetically respond in a way that stakeholders will trust. As communicators, we should strategically select our spokespeople, ensuring they can speak to their strengths and adapt as the situation evolves. 📋 Don’t Be Too Prescriptive in Plans 📋 While clients want to be prepared for every possible incident, it’s nearly impossible to foresee every scenario. Each incident will be unique, so it’s more beneficial to train organizations on best practices that apply to various scales of incidents rather than developing an overly detailed 50-page document. Flexibility and intuition are key. 💪 The Best Crisis Response Teams Play to Individual Strengths 💪 No one is an expert in everything. Organize your crisis response team so individuals can own tasks and deliverables within their expertise. For example, have your reporting guru focus on monitoring and reporting, while your relationship masters handle client relations and messaging. This approach ensures effective and efficient communication during incidents. I'm eager to integrate these learnings into our strategies at Matter Communications, ensuring we are prepared to tackle any communication challenge that comes our way. #CrisisCommunications #PRSA #PRInsights

For our first on-camera event, got my Argent suit on and rocked the on-camera portion of our first webinar. Working with Elyce Kirchner, expert in all things broadcast, and Charlene Tassinari, who knows more about social video than anyone in the biz, the message was clear: it can be intimidating, but getting on camera matters. To make it worthwhile, a few tips: - Be thoughtful on the visual (lighting, location, etc.) - Authenticity matters. Folks would rather hear the real than be bored by the polished - People (your audience, producers, buyers, etc.) are busy AF, so being short and clear is essential - Budgets are lean, but new tools make visual storytelling more accessible As I wade out into these particular waters, what other topics would be good conversations?

PRWeek's great 2024 Business Report highlights the key challenge facing our industry. Communications is more important than ever. Comms and policy leaders are being asked to play far larger roles as business partners supporting ever more stakeholders. So why did the industry suffer so much in 2023 after many years of growth? As an sector, we are not adapting fast enough to the needs. Organizations are desperate for help but also under tremendous financial strain. They now need both senior level counsel and advisory support as well as deep domain expertise to actually produce. By and large, our industry is still split by this chasm - between strategic and tactical. Clients cannot afford to separate these, either in time or money. At Bully Pulpit International our goal is to bridge this divide, building a team that can both 'think and do' at the highest levels. It's not always easy. Last year was a challenge. But if you share this vision for the future, please check out some of our open roles: https://lnkd.in/dGQwJUSG
