Volunteer Experience

  • Conservationist

    Local Illinois Forest Preserves

    - 3 years 10 months

About once a month, The NARWHALS Club would go to one of several main locations (Harms Woods, Blue Star Memorial Woods, Emily Oaks) to restore these locations. This was done using hand saws and loppers to remove invasive Buckthorn and Garlic Mustard, and fire was then used to permanently destroy the plants. Native plant seeds were also spread throughout the areas once the invasive plants had been cleared.

  • City of Edmonds Graphic

    Beach Docent

    City of Edmonds

    - 1 year 3 months

    Environment

Helping educate the public about marine life in the Sound with a 75 gallon touch tank during the summer months. It's always fun to teach people about what's going on in their environment and show them the unique wildlife they might not otherwise get to see.

  • City of Edmonds Graphic

    Volunteer

    City of Edmonds

    - 9 months

    Environment

Going out once a month to help remove invasive species, such as English Ivy, and planting native plants to restore the old growth forest of Hutt Park.

  • SOG Knives & Tools Graphic

    Coordinator Of Volunteers

    SOG Knives & Tools

    - 2 years 3 months

    Environment

This is not an official title at SOG, but I am in charge of coordinating volunteer opportunities for SOG employees. In 2019, I coordinated efforts for a day with Mountains to Sound Greenway to help remove invasive raspberries and mulch the area at a location close to SOG. I also coordinated the Hopelink volunteer day for those less interested in getting dirty. More volunteer opportunities underway for this year!

  • Adventure Scientists Graphic

    Data Collector

    Adventure Scientists

    - Present 4 years 7 months

    Environment

Collecting data on Western Redcedars in hard to reach places to help scientists create chemical and genetic databases. These databases create a genetic map where the trees in question grow, and will help determine if the logs in the timber industry are legally harvested based on where they came from.
