🚛 Operation Safe Driver Week is in Full Swing! 🚛 This week is the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week, running from July 7-13, 2024. This essential initiative focuses on enhancing driving behaviors through education, enforcement strategies, and direct interactions between drivers and law enforcement. Key Focus: Reckless, Careless, or Dangerous Driving This week law enforcement officers across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. will be actively identifying both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving practices such as: Speeding Distracted driving Following too closely Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs Drivers caught engaging in these behaviors will receive warnings or citations. This year's spotlight is on reckless, careless, or dangerous driving—defined as driving with a willful disregard for safety or without due care and attention for other road users. Importance of Outreach and Enforcement: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration emphasizes that high-visibility communications and outreach are crucial for successful transportation safety programs. These efforts must be coupled with strong enforcement to be effective. Operation Safe Driver Week aims to enhance roadway safety through proactive driver education and rigorous enforcement of traffic laws. Collaborative Efforts and Resources: Operation Safe Driver Week is part of the broader Operation Safe Driver Program, which provides valuable resources for teen and new drivers, as well as commercial motor vehicle drivers. These resources include safe-driving public service announcement videos and multilingual postcards available for free to industry and enforcement members. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving various law enforcement jurisdictions, the motor carrier industry, the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation. Together, these entities work towards the shared goal of reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on North America’s roadways. McCarthy, on why the company launched a partnership with TAT: •Combating a serious crime: Human trafficking is a horrific crime that affects communities nationwide. The company believes businesses have a responsibility to be part of the solution. •Leveraging truck drivers’ visibility: Truck drivers see a significant amount of activity on the roads, making them a valuable resource in identifying potential trafficking situations. By supporting TAT’s training efforts, McCarthy empowers them to report suspicious activity. •Raising awareness: Many people are unaware of the signs of human trafficking. Partnering with TAT allows McCarthy to utilize its network of 70-plus stores and customer interactions to raise awareness and educate the public. •Creating a safer environment: McCarthy wants to contribute to a safer environment for everyone in the communities it serves. Toll by plate is a good option for commercial fleets with some of the following needs: 1. Low toll volume and desire to avoid violations 2. Vehicles that cannot have a transponder (including trailers and towed equipment) 3. Leased equipment providers who do not want the transponder deployment overhead 4. Mutual-aid and emergency responders with limited toll usage except when responding to emergencies 5. Fleets who do not want to install and manage hardware Bestpass takes the toll out of toll.

Wow ... Today was #NOT a good day for the #TruckingEstablishment, the #TruckingSwamp, and the American Trucking Associations. First, the article in #TruckingInfo.com written by Deborah Lockridge about the 18–20-year-old Apprentice program and now this ... in the The Washington Post written by Theresa Vargas about a former-Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration engineer turned #WhistleBlower and the influence of the American Trucking Associations on #Trucking #Safety. ====================== He explains that in 2017, he proposed that his agency fund research to evaluate the effects of combining side guards with aerodynamic skirts on tractor trailers and single-unit trucks. He says he regarded the cost-benefit analysis as the most important part of the project because “if side guards would both protect the safety of vulnerable road users while at the same time offer improved fuel efficiency and reduce fuel costs, the industry might adopt such side guards voluntarily.” (Other countries require trucks to have side guards. The United States does not). The research found that adding those side guards to trucks would be cost-beneficial, Kwan says. He describes sharing that information during a presentation with staff at the American Trucking Associations and receiving #Negative #Feedback. The CVSA International Roadcheck, commonly referred to as DOT Week or Blitz Week, is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world. This year’s DOT Week takes place from today, Tuesday, May 14 through Thursday, May 16. On average, officials are anticipated to inspect nearly 15 trucks every minute across North America. This adds up to roughly 65,000 vehicles inspected across North America over these three days! This year's focus will be on Tractor Protection Systems, among other things. What Is a PREVENTABLE Collision? Apreventable collision, according to the National Safety Council, is “a collision in which the driver failed to do everything reasonable to avoid it.” The National Safety Council advises drivers to follow three simple rules for preventing collisions. 1. Recognize the hazard. Scan the road ahead, to the next two intersections in cities, to the horizon on flat roads, to the next curve on the highway, or 15–30 seconds ahead. Check the traffic to the side and behind by looking in the rearview and side mirrors every five seconds. Recognizing a hazard in advance gives you time to avoid it. 2. Understand the defense. Once you recognize a possible hazard, use your knowledge of defensive driving principles to choose the best way to avoid a collision in each situation. 3. Act correctly and in time. After you’ve chosen the best defense against the hazard, take correct action, in time to avoid a collision. This is where your alertness and driving skill pay off. You can see that the five characteristics of a defensive driver—knowledge, foresight, alertness, judgment and skill—all play a role in avoiding preventable collisions. Take some time to educate yourself on how to react to various hazardous situations. And always practice safe driving. By obeying speed limits, keeping a safe distance between you and the next driver, and using the proper signals, you are more likely to stay clear of hazardous conditions, and to make sure you don’t become a hazard

Truck Driver Fined and Arrested: A Lesson in Safety for OTR Drivers In a recent incident reported by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), a truck driver faced hefty fines and legal trouble after being caught operating an overweight vehicle. The driver was found with a truck weighing 63,000 pounds over the permissible limit for the roadway, resulting in a $19,400 fine. But what's even more concerning is the driver's state behind the wheel. Witnesses noted the driver appeared extremely fatigued, even dozing off during the stop. Can you imagine the risks posed by such exhaustion on our roads? In response to the safety risks posed, authorities placed the driver out of service to ensure adequate rest. However, shockingly, the driver disregarded this order and resumed driving within two hours, leading to their arrest for knowingly violating the out-of-service directive.
