Keep our rurals open but if you really want to help get the foreign equity owned GPO that sets the pricing for our hospitals BANNED from our state. Economies of scale are used by Vizient against Oklahoma rural hospitals. If you have 13 tiers, hidden tiers, and tier maxes…that’s not a contract, that a free for all nightmare of a scam we all fell for. Their awful written tiered agreements force our rurals to pay more for the exact same items that our large hospitals pay less for. Example box of gloves a large hospital system in the state will pay 6-8 bucks for a box of 250 exam gloves. That same box for a rural EMT? 24 bucks. There is no price transparency and you are forcing patients who live in rural areas to pay more because of the lack of infrastructure by the corporations serving them to effectively and economically get goods and services to these hospitals. And distributors who whine about the cost of delivering to rural hospitals all while posting BILLIONS in profit every quarter are the first on my 💩 list. Let’s keep our rurals open but let’s make them more profitable so that they can continue to add much needed services and gainfully employ more community members.

This is a great article from Modern Healthcare. At Sanford Health, I am so glad cybersecurity is an organizational wide accountability and isn’t taken for granted. Here are a few key takeaways from the article. Cybersecurity needs to be a top priority and a shared goal across all areas of your health system operations. You can’t buy your way into a risk free environment. Healthcare is an industry designed around connectivity and interoperability. Third and fourth party risk needs to be given proper attention. Having a Rapid Response Plan, not only for your security operations center, but also for your enterprise leadership team, is invaluable when the tough stuff happens.

Laboratories will want to take note as there are requirements for use of Laboratory Orders Interfacing (HL7 version 2.5.1) and Laboratory Results Interfacing (HL7 version 2.5.1) for public health reportables (ELR). If you don't yet have HL7 2.5.1 interfaces with trading partners (paper, fax, HL7 version 2.3.1, etc) you should make plans to update interfaces soon. This impacts both senders and receivers of laboratory data. If you are a pathology laboratory, this may impact you if you perform any public health reportables like Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease(CJD) as it is reportable in many jurisdictions. ONC has webinars. EHR vendors, providers, and those performing specimen collections will want to ensure they send complete information such as Specimen Type, Specimen collection procedures, Specimen Source site and other Ask at Order Entry (AOE) details required by the performing laboratory and/or public health for reportables.

HHS has released its final rule on disincentives for information blocking. This includes considerations for each of hospital/CAH providers under the Promoting Interoperability Program, individual providers through MIPS, and for ACOs under the Medicare Shared Savings program.
