What are the benefits and challenges of integrating autonomous vehicles into the transportation system?
In my experience the challenges of autonomous vehicles really comes down to the suitability of our infrastructure. Autonomous vehicles have tremendous potential to reduce the number of vehicles, as well as the effects of air pollution and other detrimental impacts. But we need to think about what creates a safer and efficient environment for these vehicles to operate in. One area in particular that could serve as a proving ground as well as a more controlled environment for early stage operation and adoption could be our nations port and inland logistics complexes. These areas provide a somewhat closed system or loop for trucks and off-road cargo handling equipment on marine terminals, rail yards and roadways connecting the two.
