I’m more of a value + application person.  I’ve worked with amazing tech developers who keep my guardrails up, but developing new products for product-market fit is key. That said,  I want to show appreciation to NYU Langone Health's initiative to use AI for making doctors' notes more patient-friendly.  It is a testament to the potential of generative AI in enhancing healthcare communication. This approach not only promises to bridge the gap between patient understanding and professional medical knowledge but also showcases the practical value of AI in improving patient-provider interactions. By making health information more accessible, we're stepping into a future where healthcare is inclusive, empowering patients through education. Thank you to Consumer Technology Association and the leadership of René Quashie and Ami Bhatt, MD for hosting the recent Health AI+ Symposium at Harvard Medical School. It mattered a lot that the room included so many people with very different expertise and experience—this kind of diversity will be key to using AI to actually build more equitable health innovations. Chris Gibbons, MD, MPH, René Quashie and I joined forces to share how AI matters to health equity and where it's making important advancements. Many folks shaped these insights from CTA's community including Lisa K. Fitzpatrick MD, MPH, MPA, Michael R. Crawford, Crystal Grant, Ph.D., Meg Barron, Gaurav Manchanda and many others! I walked away with three insights and questions. 1) AI is massively accelerating health innovation. According to Rock Health data, there are over 500 venture backed digital health startups in the US that have AI enabled solutions with $18B in venture funding from 2021-2023, and that number is growing. In that time, top therapeutic areas for AI startup investment were oncology ($1.9B), cardiovascular care ($1.8B), and mental health ($1.4B). How is all of this momentum around AI advancing health equity—and where could it? Thus is a huge opportunity space for health innovators. 2) In many ways, AI is like any innovation where we need to bring an equity lens and consider: Who is designing these AI innovations? Who is gaining access and who are these advancements benefiting? Who is getting funding to propel this technology? The people behind the technology matter and we can all be doing more to join forces, collaborate and bring more leaders together. 3) Anyone who cares to advance health equity needs proof points of where AI can be a force for good. To be sure, there is much to be cautious about and many examples of real harm that we should take seriously. Most examples will need feedback for improvement, but that’s true of most innovations regardless of AI. The important part is that we keep learning and collaborating to make the innovations work better for more people. One encouraging example that Casey Ross at STAT recently wrote about is the Health AI Partnership, which is leveraging AI to advance health equity for rural populations, at a time when rural hospitals are closing at alarming rates. To do so, this collaboration is offering rural hospitals the chance to integrate AI into administrative processes that will reduce costs and improve efficiencies. And that is just one of many encouraging examples surfaced in our conversation at the symposium. I am excited to learn and share more examples of where AI is showing promise and potential to advance health equity.

Don't miss Angela Cheng-Cimini 鄭婷婷's article in the latest edition of Harvard Business Review on the leadership potential of Asian employees. The data and perspective that she and Joy Chen (陈愉) share are compelling and startling. "Although Asians are the most educated segment of the American workforce, they are the least likely among all racial groups to ascend to leadership roles," and, "These racial inequities stem in part from a lack of awareness about cultural differences. Next week I will be in New Jersey for the Femtech & Consumer Innovation Summit by Kisaco Research to present K'ept Health. It's the work of early women's health champions and recent research, such as McKinsey & Company's reports "Closing the women’s health gap: A $1 trillion opportunity to improve lives and economies" & "Closing the data gaps in women’s health" that makes it that much easier for myself and other Femtech founders to get their solutions in the hands of women who desperately need them and to share their work at leading conferences and in various industry publications. I’m thrilled to share that FeelBetter is starting a new prospective research study with Brigham and Women's Hospital, building on the success of our retrospective research study. "Many polypharmacy problems aren’t detected until patients end up in the ER and, in seniors with several chronic diseases and conditions, the simultaneous use of multiple medications ultimately contributes to 10-30% of hospitalizations,” said Lisa Rotenstein, MD MBA MSc, the principal investigator of the study. “Our previous study showed that its platform can be used to identify which patients are at the highest risk of polypharmacy-related adverse events. Question for my network: how do you evaluate your digital health and health tech initiatives? Do you use any frameworks or services, etc? I am not one of those "tech can solve everything" people, but I do think it is a primary enabler for the future of health, equity, and "doing more with less" since we can't seem to magically triple our workforce or funding for it. Digital Health initiatives have been a little willy nilly and certainly aren't a silver bullet. But—for that reason, more and more attention is now being given to both evaluating digital health/health tech initiatives (finally!), AND bringing the health equity lens into their development/implementation (heck yes!) For the latter, I was interested to read the development of this Digital Health Equity-Focused Implementation Research (DH-EquIR) model! This framework outlines how you might start to integrate considerations of health equity into the implementation of your digital health technologies. Key takeaways: 👏 Inclusive Design: Technologies must be accessible and culturally sensitive, designed with input from diverse communities. 👏 Equity-Focused Planning: Integrate health equity considerations at every stage to reduce disparities. 👏 Continuous Evaluation: Monitor and adapt interventions to meet the needs of underserved populations. 👏 Sustainability: Ensure financial sustainability and interoperability for long-term success. 👏 Collaboration: Engage stakeholders from all sectors to drive impactful health solutions. It is promising to see health equity being promoted through thoughtful and inclusive digital health solutions designed to meet people where their real challenge is at, and I recognize that tech, people, and workflows go ✋in ✋ Frameworks like this are helpful as directional guidance to start with. I'm currently working through a piece of reflective work, reflecting on my time so far as CEO and co-founder of a health tech start-up founded in 2019. My very first start-up. Thinking of the good, the bad, and the ugly. What has gone well and what has not gone so well. Coming from a clinical background with no prior technology experience, I'm contemplating the journey and how it's shaped me both personally and professionally. One thing that stood out to me after speaking to Bilal K. about my journey was the concept of having the right attitude. Having the right attitude is paramount because the majority of everything else that follows is teachable. If you wish to step out of my comfort zone and learn about the world of business, start-ups, health tech........ practically anything. You can, it's all teachable... provided you have the right attitude toward it and embrace the journey. The attitude to work hard, invest time, and invest in yourself. The attitude to learn from others and to know you won't be the smartest person in the room all the time. A great attitude will allow people around you to like you, want to work with you and go above and beyond with you on deadlines and projects. The wrong attitude will push all of that away and stagnate your growth and that of the teams. Having the right attitude is key; it's everything.

#ICYMI: Last week, I published a story about the role health systems can — and, according to experts, should — play in digital health solution development. The article aligns with the idea of “radical collaboration,” an oft-repeated strategy at #ATANexus. As noted by General Catalyst’s Holly Maloney, radical collaboration is necessary for the evolution of virtual care. Sources I spoke with for the article below agree that health systems with the resourses to do so should get involved in digital health development; however, there are numerous potential pitfalls.
