Unfortunately, I am not old enough to have ever seen Willie Mays play, but being a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, I was saddened to hear about his death. Willie Mays had an amazing career and is highly regarded as one of, if not the best player of the game. So in honor of his memory, I thought I would post some of his most famous quotes, as well as a picture of "The Catch" in his honor: On Baseball and Life: 1. "Baseball is a game, yes. It is also a business. But what it most truly is, is disguised combat. For all its gentility, its almost leisurely pace, baseball is violence under wraps." 2. "They throw the ball, I hit it. I don’t share often about the flower farm my partner and I started. I’ve been an avid gardener for many years at this point. But during a deep crisis of faith, heart and mind...growing things is what kept me above board. It added much-needed serotonin to my life. I found it effective at helping manage both my depression and my ADHD to varying degrees. Certainly, it became a space to clear my head and elevate my mood. In 2022 I made two major life changes. I left the Government of Canada after more than 15 years and bought a 50-acre farm. I also started a job in the private sector. Which I thought might be a major shift. For me, it turned out it wasn’t. It’s still hard battles in meeting rooms with people above my pay grade making decisions. I’ve learned to show, not tell as a means to demonstrate impact. Sometimes it lands well, other times more advocacy or regrouping is necessary. That said the support I have in my team is tremendous and we give space and grace to each other to be the best we can be. This is seen also when I say ALL of my team wants a tour of the flower farm because they too find joy in the sharing of images, video and mood. Garden walks and talks have become a thing. It’s not scoffed at, and there isn’t a belief that I am not working. Instead, there is a deep appreciation for how my brain works and that this is processing information time. It’s like when you fold the laundry and you can keep focus. Gardening is like that for my brain and my body. This year we doubled the growing space on the farm and now I have flowers on more than 1/2 an acre. My partner added a grass runway for his airplane and we ended up with both of our passions side by side in this beautiful space not far from the Canadian Shield and the Ottawa River. I took up markets on the weekend and hired someone to help so that we could share back with our local community. I’m not going to lie, it’s been stressful at times and one heck of a lot of work. It was and is hard. But the rewards for both my mental and physical health and the joy of sharing gorgeous blooms have been a buoy to my heavy heart. Equity work is difficult. It can crush you. This place fills my lungs with air and breathes for me in the challenging moments. It’s my morning routine to stroll here every day after I drop the kids off at the bus. Its uplifting connection has led to new ways of pollinating ideas, and new thought processes and created a deep connection between myself and the land. I take that energy and refocus it on my work. Find your peace. Channel it if you can. Hold on to it. Enjoy it without guilt or shame. You need to nurture yourself too.

I have been prompted by LinkedIn to answer questions about leadership, creativity, strategy and the like. It asked me how to use curiosity when developing creative strategies. I gave it a shot. See rule 10 and feel free to let me know the answer. I will use simple axioms. 0. Know thyself. 1. Meditate daily. 2. Don’t read or watch the work of others for an extended period of time. 3. Embrace paradox and contradiction. 4. 5. Keep a notebook. 6. Write it all down. 7. Review and consider. 8. Take a walk. 9. Recognize patterns in nature. 10. Come back and tell me what number 4 is.

This past Monday, I celebrated my 10-year anniversary at Adobe, and I'm filled with gratitude. Working for this company has been life-changing. But instead of a lengthy, reflective missive, I am sharing a handful of hard-won things I've learned that have shaped my philosophy on work with the hope that others find them useful: 1. Be of Service to Others: Helping others has been a cornerstone of my work. Whether supporting colleagues, guiding clients, or contributing to team efforts, focusing on helping the people to right and left of you provides a positive, safe, and trusting environment. This has not only helped others succeed but has also enriched my own professional and personal growth. 2. Strive for Least Imperfection: Aiming for least imperfection means continuously improving and learning. It's about doing the best possible job with the resources and knowledge available, and then reflecting on how to do even better next time. This mindset encourages progress and innovation without the paralyzing fear of making mistakes. 3. Give Grace, Especially to Yourself: Self-compassion is crucial. To err is human and setbacks are part of the growth process. Giving grace to oneself means being kind and forgiving to yourself, which in turn makes it easier to extend that same understanding to others. This principle has helped maintain resilience and a positive outlook. 4. The Work is the Reward: Find fulfillment in the process itself, not just in the end results. The challenges, efforts, and daily dedication are what truly enrich and give meaning to professional journeys. Be passionate about the work and dispassionate about the outcomes. As I look ahead to my next Adobe milestone, I'm excited for new challenges and new philosophies. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey. The CEO of Nvidia says "Strategy is Storytelling". That's cute. Nice alliteration there buddy. Or maybe he's serious. Maybe he's saying that no leader, or dictator, or soviet-style planning board has anywhere near the mental bandwidth to predict and create the future, so strategy has to be living, and dynamic, and shared. Like a story is. And maybe he's saying that for a strategy to succeed in an environment anything like the real world, it has to morph and grow into an all-consuming, ever-expanding, mind-virus that marshals the intelligence and creativity of everyone it infects - from employees, to partners, to customers, to journalists. You know. Like a good story does. Maybe that's what he's saying.
