#Communications and #marketing are not auxiliary functions. They're essential business functions just like operations, finance, or HR. I'm covinced that this is the central misunderstanding of many business leaders when it comes to comms and marketing. 🔍 Like any other department, there are service and production aspects to the communications role. But communications is *not* fundamentally an internal service department. 🙅‍♂️ When hiring a comms team or director, hire them to be the strategic internal truth-tellers and leader(s) in how your organization moves and communicates. If you're not willing to make that jump, don't hire a communications director.

Climate change is a persistent challenge, and without long-term solutions, its impact will continue to grow. Two years ago, I created a documentary to highlight the struggles faced by residents in ASAL rural areas. In Kiptoim Village, Baringo County, people endure long queues, spend nights at water points, and rely on costly bodabodas due to the loss of their donkeys to donkey skin trade. Despite the creation of water pans, the water is often unfit for consumption, forcing residents to depend on the Oljoro spring, built during the precolonial period. Prove-its matter. I see these stats as prove-its that Pinnacle genuinely cares about people and relationships, and that’s the avenue for creating long-term shareholder value.

I had a great week meeting with some mentees and providing some coaching advice, and it got me thinking about the power of mentorships. Although public service careers are inherently rewarding, navigating the complexities of the government sector can be challenging, especially for those new to management and leadership. One thing that I wish I had taken better advantage of throughout my career is mentors. I think this hindered me somewhat from where I wanted to be as a public servant and, more importantly, how to get there. I needed better guidance on navigating the bureaucracy and making sense of the system, especially when getting into the SES. I saw some articles about people applying cold on USAJobs and getting these positions a while back, but that is the equivalent of winning the MegaMillions. The odds are the same. I am happy to be on the sidelines now and be able to impart the knowledge gained from many hash marks on my sleeve and many lessons learned on what NOT to do, to aspiring federal procurement leaders. Public service careers offer a chance to make a real difference. By seeking a mentor, you invest in your growth and maximize your impact. So, don't hesitate to reach out to people. Talk to colleagues, attend industry events, or leverage LinkedIn to connect with experienced professionals in your field. Remember, mentorship is a two-way street. It is in everyone's interest to pay it forward and empower the next generation of public servants. If someone tells you no, don’t take it personally. It’s not all parties and parades (although sense of community and celebration is a big part of what makes vibrant commercial business districts). I am geeking over the data-driven strategy development example from Galax. Business development efforts that address unmet market needs, that are matched with preferences of real people in your community. Work smarter, not harder. Be authentic.

What is it like to bring your authentic self to the workplace? Take a look at my LGBTQIA+ PRIDE Feature at Bureau of Reclamation Where I was hired earlier this year. I had been told by an independent career coach who claimed she was an “expert” in Federal job placement that “no one cares”: 😡about my TGI identity at the Department of the Interior 😡To omit my work with DEI 😡To take out my she/they pronouns in my resume 😡 And to especially take out the work I’ve done with Trans, Gender Expansive, and Intersex (TGI) people. Well, I had already turned in this resume with Reclamation that had included all these facts. I wanted a career with the Federal Government, but my stomach sank when I received the news that I would have to closet myself to be hired. I wasn’t willing to go back into hiding. To have my new workplace embrace my DEI contributions and especially leaning into my expertise in gender, pronouns, and inclusive language Enough so to feature me for PRIDE Has been a dream come true. I hope to fulfill my job at Reclamation while continuing to create change for my coworkers and the public. For this PRIDE, think about not just how you SHOW UP in the world as 2SLGBTQIA+. But also think about how OTHERS SHOW UP for you. 🩵Can you be your authentic self? 🩷Can you bring your work in DEI or queer identity to your workplace? To your friend groups? To your family? 🤍Did you get hired because you hid a vital part of yourself? Or were you hired with full transparency about your authentic self? 👉🏽👉🏽👉🏽Are your relationships built upon supportive friend or family groups who embrace who you are? Today's #MetricMonday is all about my LEAST favorite metric: impressions. Don't get me wrong, impressions are foundational to most #communications work, because what is a message worth if it's not seen or heard? But we've asked impressions to do far too much in measuring success. In truth, impressions simply indicate how many eyes were exposed to a message. A nice volume indicator, however, impressions don't tell us: 👉 If the audience paid attention to the message. 👉 How the audience received the message. 👉 If the message drove the intended call-to-action among the audience. Other data can answer those questions, which is why I always pair impression totals with other metrics in my analysis. Impressions are a great baseline metric, but you'll always need a qualifier to make it matter. SIDENOTE: Way back in my traditional PR days we'd use a multiplier to indicate how impressions in print would scale to real-world exposure. Because apparently if someone read a newspaper, they'd inevitably pass it to two other people to read the EXACT same clip. It was around that time that my distrust for impression totals began. Is that still a thing? I hope not.
