This story is from Illinois. They are trying to remove Step Therapy which is a common complaint of consumers. In simple terms Illinois new law means the insurance company can't force you to try less expensive options before covering treatment your Dr. thinks you should do. I can argue both sides. On the one hand if your trusted Dr. is saying you need to do treatment A then that seems reasonable. On the other hand when the insurance company says treatments B, C, and D show equal effectiveness at a lower total cost... that helps keep premiums down for everyone. Bottom-line is I imagine a lot of states are going to watch and see what happens in Illinois over the next few years. If this law does not cause the cost of medical care and the cost of medical insurance to rise dramatically other states may follow. I don't just sell Employee Benefits, I teach Employee Benefits. I tell my students the great part about our industry is legislation causes it to constantly change. New agents that stay current can compete with tenured agents that don't service "smaller accounts". If the physician employer/contractor, broker/agent doesn't ask for 5 or more years of loss and discipline information for medmal activities: 1. outside of the insured entity and 2. before the provider started at that entity. There can be additional potential adverse consequences, losses, non-renewals. It matters!! I've had business walk away because I insist on it. And Im glad to let them. Its oftentimes why they are in trouble. A medical entity needs to ask for this every year! and have it at their fingertips. Anything short of that should be suspect!

The uninsured rate in Kansas (8.6 percent) was higher than in the U.S. overall (8.0 percent) for the second year in a row in 2022, even as the rate in Kansas and the nation improved between 2021 and 2022. Kansas had the 13th highest uninsured rate among all 50 states and Washington, D.C., in 2022, a shift of 17 positions from 2009, when Kansas had a lower uninsured rate than the U.S. overall (12.6 percent compared to 15.1 percent).
