FA is a rare and debilitating neuromuscular disorder, with symptoms typically appearing in childhood. I'm so proud to share that I wrote this year's CEO Pay Gap article for BioSpace. We found that despite the strong headwinds that battered the industry last year, CEOs were still often paid hundreds of times more than their median employees. A couple of standouts: 1 - Pfizer head Albert Bourla took a 35% pay cut, but remains one of the highest-paid CEOs across the industry. He takes home nearly 300 times more than the median employee. 2 - J&J CEO Joaquin Duato had the largest pay jump in BioSpace's list, increasing from $13.1 million to $28.4 million. He makes 338 times more than the median J&J employee. 3 - Topping this year's list is Israeli multinational Teva, whose CEO Richard Francis made nearly 400 times more than the median employee. One of the highlights of Mental Health Awareness Month at Genentech was a companywide watch party for the documentary Like, followed by an interactive, live-streamed Q&A with director Scilla Andreen. This short film examines the reasons why we’ve become so dependent on our mobile devices and recommends small steps we can take to create healthier boundaries with technology. Genentech Wins FDA Approval for First Adjuvant Therapy for ALK-Positive, Early NSCLC The FDA on Thursday greenlit the use of Genentech’s Alecensa (alectinib) for the adjuvant treatment of patients with early-stage, anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive non-small cell lung cancer who have undergone tumor resection. With the approval, Alecensa is now the “first and only” ALK inhibitor approved for this indication and patient population, according to Genentech. Thursday’s regulatory win is backed by data from the Phase III ALINA trial, a randomized, active-controlled and open-label study comparing adjuvant Alecensa with platinum-based chemotherapy. The study enrolled 257 patients with Stage IB to IIIA tumors who had undergone resection and tested positive for anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) using an FDA-approved test. Results from ALINA, which the company released in October 2023, showed that Alecensa could cut the risk of disease recurrence or death by 76% versus platinum-based chemotherapy. This treatment effect was highly significant and yielded a p-value of less than 0.0001. The ALK blocker also led to a significant improvement in central nervous system-disease-free survival, according to an exploratory analysis of ALINA. Genentech CMO Levi Garraway in a statement on Thursday called ALINA’s disease-free survival data “unprecedented,” adding that “Alecensa significantly improves upon the standard of care for people with early-stage ALK-positive lung cancer.”

I am curious to hear what the rest of the community here thinks. What are your thoughts on whether or not lunch breaks still exist in the Corporate work place? I have seen a growing number of meetings being added to calendars that either start at noon, or 1230, or end after noon, or even span the whole noon-1 hour. Work life Balance is equally as important as quality of work. If we expect our teams to miss important recharge points such as a lunch break, then we are not showing our teams we respect them. I know what you may be thinking? Well, can't you shift when you eat? Sure. However, most of those noon-1 sessions are booked because others are not available due to meetings from 11-noon, or 1-2. This means, some of us fortunate few, have meetings before, during, and after the lunch block. I intentionally book my calendar for one hour so that I have the ability to stop, for even a moment, to eat, recharge, sometimes even just take a bio break. When my directs book meetings between Noon and 1- try to reach out to them, and confirm if it is truly needed at that time or not, or if we can talk at another period in time. Why? Not because I want a lunch break, but I want my team to take their break, and recover. If we work from 8-5, that is 9 hours, including a lunch hour.

Mental health matters...let's chat. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as we navigate the complexities of our personal and professional lives, it’s crucial to acknowledge an often-ignored aspect of our workday: mental health struggles. This conversation is so important as we collectively face an increasingly demanding work environment…as well as an increasingly demanding job hunt for those seeking work. Managing mental health is an ongoing journey. There are days filled with motivation and productivity, seamlessly ticking off tasks and dragging things over the finish line. But there are also days when the weight of anxiety and stress makes even the simplest tasks feel impossible. It's important to remember that these experiences are not signs of weakness but just a part of being human. Not every day can be all sunshine and rainbows. Acknowledging this can be empowering. And, as an employer or leader, understanding this is the first step toward fostering a supportive workplace culture within your team. I had my own run ins with severe anxiety due to an untenable workload and an insane travel schedule. I am so incredibly thankful that I was able to take a step back, realign my work into something humanly possible within the confines of a 40–50-hour workweek, and take the time to meet with an excellent career counselor who helped me tremendously. My counselor gave me some excellent pointers that have helped me and might help you too: Set Boundaries: Saying yes to everything isn’t workable. And being the person that everyone turns to is not fair. Set those boundaries and delegate whenever possible.   Step Back and Recharge: Take some time away. We all know unlimited PTO is a scam and working for yourself doesn’t always mean a lot of downtime, but it’s made even worse if you don’t attempt to take any time off at all. Build a Support Network: Talk to colleagues or peers who understand your experiences. They can provide emotional support and practical advice. Look outside your workplace so you can ensure a more comfortable exchange of information. Talk About It: Create a dialogue with your team about needs. Discussing it can be cathartic for everyone. Also, respecting when people say they need a mental health day, or a break, is important. As I like to say, we must talk about this stuff so we can get better about it! If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Please know that. We're all here together. If you ever need a coffee, or a referral to a good counselor or career coach, just reach out to me.
