A good read on what AI in self-driving is capable of and how Full Self Driving stacks with Waymo's (and Amazon Zoox) approach to get robo-taxis out on the roads everywhere (slow, steady, careful). TL;DR - FSD is great, but solving the edge cases, basically generalized intelligence in non-trivial and infrequent situations is currently very hard if not impossible. https://lnkd.in/gKtk4Uk7 Similarly - I recommend this good tech talk on what's possible with LLM's on our road to "AGI" and why LLMs are NOT the thing that will get us there even with all the hype behind them. https://lnkd.in/gdRJzWDn

Another good AI report. What caught my eye was chapter 2 chart 8. The significant difference in performance between open and closed LLM's foreshadows that data and data ownership will shape the landscape and successes here.

Amazon's annual shareholder letters are always a great read. This time on building Primitives :) "However, when you think in primitives, like our Robotics team does, you prioritize the building blocks, picking important initiatives that can benefit from each of these primitives, but which build the tool chest to compose more freely (and quickly) for future and complex needs. Our Robotics team has built primitives in each of the above domains that will be lynchpins in our next set of automation, which includes multi-floor storage, trailer loading and unloading, large pallet mobility, and more flexible sortation across our outbound processes (including in vehicles). The team is also building a set of foundation AI models to better identify products in complex environments, optimize the movement of our growing robotic fleet, and better manage the bottlenecks in our facilities."

The decision to ban “AI” generated code in operating systems makes a lot of sense to me. Think about it. If you were one of the members of a thesis defense committee would you accept one that was written with “AI”? What about accepting an evaluation report on a critical component? We do have a 45 TOPs NPU in Copilot+ PCs. But it’s not all about speed. You can get speed with GPUs too - even faster! But it’s about efficiency. It’s about battery life on your laptop that you are only allowed to fly (in the US) with a 100WHr battery capacity. Its about minimizing thermal throttling. Its about sustainability. When you get 45 TOPs with single digit watts, you can compute almost all the time. Something like Recall would totally trash your device experience when not offloaded to efficient hardware even if it is able to ‘run’. Phi Silica would take over your system resources without efficient hardware and if you want generative AI running in your games, you may soon end up thermally throttled.

Really interesting read on the Tesla FSD vs. Waymo approach. There are challenges for both. The way l see it, Tesla is trying to solve a software problem through scale. Theory goes more data equals better performance (simply put). Waymo has a software, hardware and scale problem. Tesla has a hardware challenges too, of course, but it may be they will better the type and weatherproof vs expanding their hardware set. I'm not quite convinced Waymo is better with edge cases than FSD. It would be great if one was devised, with everyday drivers devising the cases. I vote for cab and truck/delivery drivers since they've probably seen it all. And yes ALL AI systems take a best guess approach at correctness when it comes to the less familiar. Awesome to join Mike Benitez and Jake Chapman on the The Merge for this episode for some spicy takes. Top of mind for me: The Commercial Item Preference is the most violated law by the US Govt. Too many times the engineer's aesthetic of developmental over commercial (build over buy) dominates the warfighters needs to fight right and tonight... and win. We start discussing this, and how it was the underlying legal issue behind Palantir's lawsuit against the US Army, around 14:00 in the video. There has been a lot of backsliding since the lawsuit. Instead of leaning harder into Commercial Item Preference (and its incredibly rigorous 3-part test -- i.e. only if you can't change your requirement or get the commercial item provider to change their product, only THEN, can you go developmental) we see cost-type contracts being favored. Remember, it is the law (not a suggestion). To Steelman it, it is a misguided sense that contractors make too much money. Sadly the reason we don't have an American Industrial Base like we did in WW2 and instead a narrow Defense Industrial Base is that it isn't profitable enough compared to the alternatives, particular for the dynamic and dominant parts of our economy. The answer isn't to pay more. It is to pay LESS but incentivize speed, performance and let performers capture margin (that is capitalism, don't let monopsony slide us into communism). Ball would rather make aluminum cans than satellite buses, selling that division off. The reality is that services/cost-type businesses can't invest in R&D. But Product companies can. Don't tar product companies for the sins of services companies. And that R&D reinvestment is the only way to get more for less continuously as the government buyer. While Palantir started generating profits in 2023, our CUMULATIVE profits since inception (2003) are -5.6Bn (that's negative 5.6 Billion). That's what it costs in R&D to make products that matter. And that whole time plenty of acquisition folks would talk about affordability. Hard to imagine how 10M or 100M would be a bad deal on 5.6B. I'm sure SpaceX's cumulative profit is closer to -10bn. That's what transforming launch economics by 85% takes. And all the risk was born not by the taxpayer, but private investors. For the same amount of money and with cost-type contract mentality the State of California built 1600ft of elevated rail.
