As a coalition, we recognize that being in good health and wellbeing are foundational to racial healing and social justice in communities. We are committed to normalizing rest and the practice of sabbaticals as a strategy to achieve health and wellbeing. Coalition members have shared with us that although the three-month sabbatical is an amazing opportunity for rest, not all leaders have the ability to take three-months off, and that shorter breaks are also needed and are impactful. In response to this feedback, we have expanded our Sabbatical Program to also offer grants for shorter sabbatical periods: Two-Week Sabbatical Grant One-Month Sabbatical Grant We aim to support nonprofit leaders with two-week and one-month sabbatical that allow them to step back from the exhaustion of work and re-connect with their own vitality and balance. THIS. IS. BRILLIANT 👏🏽 While, I won't be able to benefit from this radical ecosystem move, I can't emphasize enough how important this modeling is. As a nonprofit leader, I'm dreaming of radical opportunities to bring to and engage my team to support their mental, emotional, and spiritual labor they give every day and waking moment. We need all members of the ecosystem to create margin and support the creativity, wellbeing, and health that we all need and deserve. For National Indigenous Peoples' Day, I am reflecting on how my responsibilities are actioned; and how I practice them daily as a guest & settler on Treaty 13 territory (following the guidance of the Two Row Wampum Belt treaty). What does being a good guest look like? It means: I) Centering Indigenous-led subject matter expertise and lived experience as a day-to-day practice II) Holding space for mutual respect and reciprocity in nation-to-nation dialogue and relations III) Being a good Aunty, colleague, and neighbour IV) Supporting Indigenous whistleblowers: when Indigenous women write a written report exposing sexual assault and gender-based violence: BELIEVE SURVIVORS. (It's not hard). V) If bad actors try to silence Indigenous voices: then CONFRONT THEM and DOCUMENT. VI) If bad actors try to perpetuate genocide and gender violence against Indigenous service users, colleagues, and friends: then SHOW UP FOR THEM and NAME CORRUPTION. This is not just an ethical issue, this is about legal compliance. VII) Implement the attached Inquiry recommendations to show respect for the work of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, who have 60,000 years of wisdom and technical expertise in sustainability, good governance, and mainstreaming human rights. #TruthandReconciliation #IndigenousRights #UNDRIP #HumanRights #OCAP #InclusiveInnocation #Cdnimm

#Allyship As we enter the last week of Pride Month, we continue to embrace signs of allyship, celebration and resolve. This month has been a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of the #LGBTQ+ community. However, a commitment to inclusion and equality must extend beyond June. With more than 20% of LGBTQ+ employees experiencing discrimination at work, there is an urgent need to protect and support the community year-round. To truly move from INTENT to IMPACT, we must take actionable steps towards inclusivity every single day. Some opportunities are: 1.     Educate Yourself and Others: Understanding the historical, cultural, and political significance of the LGBTQ+ movement is crucial. Employers can continue to make it safe to have open conversations and share resources that cover LGBTQ+ issues and history. 2.     Create Inclusive Spaces: Inclusive environments ensure that ALL employees feel safe and respected. Employers should provide gender-neutral restrooms and use inclusive language in all communications. 3.     Support LGBTQ+ Events and Organizations: Both employers and individuals can show their support by participating in and sponsoring LGBTQ+ events. Volunteering for or donating to LGBTQ+ organizations can also demonstrate a commitment to the community. Let's take this moment to reflect on our efforts and identify areas for growth. Together, we can create a world where EVERYONE feels valued and respected, no matter their identity. Remember, #allyship is not a one-month commitment—it's a lifelong journey. I wish I were one of the 12 women granted $20 million by Melinda French Gates. I would have distributed it among C/Can cities' local CSOs to strengthen their organizational capacity, enabling them to expand their impactful work without  fundraising and reporting hassles. (#MelindacallIsabel) Until Melinda gets to know us and learns that the C/Can model works, I will continue working closely with all our partners. 😍 Because cancer care requires a cross-sector commitment to drive real and meaningful change, partnerships between the non-profit and for-profit sectors are essential. For 6 years, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Roche. Our journey has been incredibly rewarding, filled with challenges and breakthroughs. After a comprehensive partnership review of our collective impact, we decided to document our journey and develop a collaboration framework between City Cancer Challenge and Roche. We both agree this framework could help many organizations navigate cross-sector collaborations. It may not be a one-size-fits-all, but I believe it will benefit many CSOs and corporates. Whilst its hard to see that any progress has been made, to the contrary - it looks like 0 progress made and everything got worse, with recent years breaking through the 1.5C targets. We mustn't give up hope that the many initiatives that have been kicked off as a result of these agreements, have prevented worse things from happening... too optimistic? maybe But working in the sustainability and SDG space has never been more exciting, with many people sharing that a just transition to a more sustainable, de-growth and circular economy is, ...possible. The questions is how fast, to prevent worse things from happening (Climate Catastrophy, Ecological Collapse, ...the list is getting longer). Currently the ANNUAL financing gap to the 2030 SDGs is (according to UN estimates), around $4 trillion. This is the same as Germany's or Japan's Gross Domestic Product. This is a staggering number and concept that the money missing to achieve the SDGs is the same as the monetary value of ALL finished goods and services made in Germany or Japan on an annual basis. And yet, the world economy is worth around $100 Trillion, so $4 trillion = 4%. That ...almost...sounds doable? too optimistic? maybe When it comes to asset managers, total discretionary assets under management (AUM) of the 500 biggest managers amounted to USD 113.7 trillion at the end of 2022, down by 13.7% from the end of 2021. The largest, BlackRock, manages $10 trillion and the next biggest 2, Vanguard ($9 trillion) and Fidelity ($4 trillion). Surely, investing into solutions on a planet that is actually liveable with resources being consumed at a sustainable pace is what its at? Otherwise, what will be managed in 20 or 30 years?

In the early 1900s, philanthropy was largely driven by big Religious Organizations to a few wealthy individuals and families who made substantial contributions to public institutions such as libraries, universities, and hospitals. Organizations Like Missionaries of Charity, Caritas International, Ramakrishna Mission, Figures like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were emblematic of this era, focusing on building enduring legacies through large-scale projects and endowments. Their approach was often paternalistic, with a top-down mindset about how to address societal issues. As the 20th century progressed, the scope and nature of philanthropy began to shift. The mid-century saw the rise of corporate philanthropy, where businesses started to play a significant role in charitable activities. Foundations like the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation became prominent, channeling substantial resources into addressing global issues like poverty, public health, and education. Entering the 21st century, philanthropy has become even more diverse and democratized. The advent of the internet and digital platforms has enabled broader participation from individuals across different economic backgrounds. Crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe and Kickstarter have empowered ordinary people to contribute to causes they care about, often resulting in swift and substantial fundraising efforts for various initiatives.
