Here's how you can navigate salary and benefits negotiations in a product design career.
Money isn’t everything, there are many things outside of base salary that can be discussed when negotiating a package like bonus structure and payout, WFH days, etc. Approach negotiations holistically and think creatively. A colleague once negotiated a 4/10 schedule as a counter response when salary expectations were not met. Rather than working 5 days a week for less money, they created an agreement to work 10 hours a day for four days a week.

The similarities of objects or ideas acts as an inbuilt navigational feature as well as a way of meeting people’s assumptions about the way the world works. Imagine being at a large market to purchase some cheese but you’re not sure where to find the cheese. Having seen a piece of cheese once or twice in your life, you understand that most cheese comes from cows and most cheese is stored in a refrigerator, but not the freezer. Using just two parameters, you’re able to find your cheese by searching for the dairy section within the perishable, refrigerated foods area of the store.
