Tom's Tuesday Tip: In the Buffalo home market, I see more & more homes sell for $1,000,000+ Even though we insure some of these homes, I often wonder, do the buyers really know the right homeowners insurance to buy? You see, there are insurance companies out there that don't advertise to this luxury home market. They stay "in-their-lane" and provide to end coverages that the TV ad insurance companies cannot. A few examples: *Diamond earrings misplaced, disappear, are lost somehow. Not covered on brand name homeowners, covered on luxury home insurance policy. *Water intrusion in basement, ruining the $30,000 theater room. Maybe $2,500 coverage on brand name policy, fully covered on the luxury homeowners insurance policy. *You have a very nice dinner party at your home, unfortunately, Kate twists her ankle and it could be broken. Medical payments on brand name insurance, $1,000 (Now Kate may be suing you). $25,000 on a luxury home policy - and no lawsuit needed. Since no one reads their homeowners insurance policy, they put their trust & guidance with the insurance agent/insurance company. But insurance companies are not a one-size-fits-all solution either. They cater to vastly different type of homeowner. I cringe when I see some of these TV insurance ads, trying to be all things to everyone. Be a smart insurance consumer. Recently informed about this INSURANCE CARRIER practice happening in NEW JERSEY, I suggest priority be we reviewing CLIENT information on CARRIER PORTALS and having all in book of business called ASAP to learn of any issues they may have together with if informed their insurance cancelling or cancelled and offered another Plan. #INSURANCE INDUSTRY seems to have become the WILD WILD WILD WEST and getting worse, for #Consumers and their #Agents / #Brokers. You still have word MEDICARE in your business name? You may want to rename without MEDICARE in it, regardless if you make reference to your company not a #GOVERNMENT #AGENCY nor affiliated with GOVERNMENT. We may be surprised of what fines and penalties are imposed on Agencies for this practice, in Fall and Winter coming seasons.

It is a hard market. Is it a hard market? The Hard Market. Is that a statement or a question? If you ask the carriers or take a look at the insurance market from a macro level, then yes, you can say we are experiencing a hard market.

So what is an Agreed Value Policy and why would you ever need one?? Take for example this 1996 Ford F350 XLT... After a total loss situation, the insurance company came back and told the owner that his truck was only worth $13,132. The problem with that is the owner had more than that into just the 7.3L Diesel engine and suspension. When we sat down and added up the receipts, we found over $55,000 in just parts and professional bodywork. This didn't take into account the hours of labor he did himself on the Frame-off restoration and more than likely other expenses that were forgotten about or even the initial cost of the donor truck to start with. So how do you protect your investment? Get it Appraised!! Get an Agreed Value Insurance Policy put in place that will compensate you for your investment in the case of a total loss. Budget. This is something our family sets every month. However, this is a question that can scare an insured. As a former retail agent, I remember all the responses from prospective insureds... "Why do they need to know that? Just give me your best number. I don't trust that they won't use this against me!" The term "full coverage" is a term commonly mistakenly used by insureds, usually means that you have physical damage coverage to your vehicle on top of your State required liability limits. Collision and Comprehensive coverage will provide this to your auto. While Collision will coverage damage to your auto in the event of a crash, the Comprehensive part will cover anything resulting from a not at-fault incident. Make sure you know your policy in detail so you are prepared when the unexpected happens.
