What do you do if conflicting priorities are derailing your IT Strategy projects?
Compliment your IT Strategy with a scorecard, ideally a balanced (as in Financial, Customer, Operations and Learning and Growth) scorecard. The degree you are able to identify value measures for each strategy the prioritization and reprioritization of initiatives that deliver solutions that either advance or introduce new capabilities will assist with decisions. Of course the timing required (work effort plus elapsed time) and resource(s) availability are variables that should be considered when applying a portfolio (prioritization) management view for decision making. Remember, your IT strategy is reflected in the investments made and expected timing of value (ROI) to be delivered by marshalling resources across the enterprise.

You're struggling to communicate with your team. How can you build better relationships?
As a leader of people and teams it is critical to understand and seek to apply the notion that it is not about you. Yes, we need to work to achieving progress and attaining goals. However, often times it is necessary to adapt your own preferred communication style, pace and process to meet others where they are. This isn’t an easy task, and isn’t one that may succeed on the first or even second try. With focus and perseverance you can win the day with a successful adaptation of communication and problem solving. I am reminded of one of Covey’s seven habits, “Begin with the End in Mind” as a guide. This may be applied to both micro and well as macro initiatives. Lastly, keep in mind the values of the organization. And refer to them.

You’re about to take a Business Architecture certification exam. How can you ensure you pass?
Two resources come to mind as related to preparation. One of course is the business architecture book of knowledge. A must read for passing any business architecture certification exam, including the original BAA exam that I contributed to producing, circa 2008. The other is Whynde Kuehn’s “Strategy To Execution,” a walk down the yellow brick road to the emerald city of business architecture for the digitally powered twenty-first century enterprise. Now, with that said, you can accelerate your learning and exam prep by reaching out to those of us who have been practicing business architecture for nearly three decades to obtain some practical experiences and stories about the reality of its use from 2008 to now.
