Second Acts for Strong Communities
The Alliance, in partnership with encore.org's Generation to Generation campaign, has launched Second Acts for Strong Communities, an initiative to help its network of human-serving organizations leverage the time and expertise of older adults looking to embark on encore careers that positively impact their communities.
There are three major components to the initiative:
Implementing an intentional encore human capital approach at demonstration sites

In a learning community, leaders and encore talent from each demonstration site will share insights and experiences resulting from their activities. The Alliance and Encore.org will provide the infrastructure for the learning community by providing virtual and in-person knowledge sharing opportunities. Together, the learning community will gather knowledge, create replicable tools and materials, and build a network of ambassadors to scale intergenerational models through the Alliance network and nonprofit and public human-serving sectors.Other creators -

About the Award
Born in 1924, Mary Kathryn Nenno worked at NAHRO from 1960 to 1991, serving first as Assistant Director for Housing, then as Director of Program Policy and Research, then as Associate Director for Policy Development. She was one of the first to initiate NAHRO’s role as monitor and reporter on federal legislation of critical importance to housing and community development practitioners. In 1987, she and Philip M. Klutznick were jointly awarded NAHRO’s highest honor, the M. Justin Herman award. Ms. Nenno was also a Trustee Emirita of the Cooperative Housing Foundation.
A lifetime NAHRO member, Ms. Nenno was an extensive traveler, speaker and prolific writer. Her works include both articles for industry publications such as the Journal of Housing and Community Development and Development Law and Outlook, as well as full-length books such as Housing in Local Government and The Story of Housing and Ending the Stalemate: Moving Housing and Urban Development into the Mainstream of America's Future.
The Nenno award is presented in two categories: Organizational, for a NAHRO Region, Chapter or State Association, and Individual, for a NAHRO member or group of members. Awards go to efforts that exemplify the highest legal and ethical standards. -

Rockford needs a lot of things. Engagement, I think, is what this town needs the most.
Engagement is the key to everything else we need: More wealth, less crime, an educated and skilled workforce, lower taxes, dynamic art and culture, good health, better results from our local governments.
We don’t always see engagement in Rockford, but it’s all around us. That’s what inspired the stories we’re sharing with you today.
This is not a comprehensive list of engaged people in…Rockford needs a lot of things. Engagement, I think, is what this town needs the most.
Engagement is the key to everything else we need: More wealth, less crime, an educated and skilled workforce, lower taxes, dynamic art and culture, good health, better results from our local governments.
We don’t always see engagement in Rockford, but it’s all around us. That’s what inspired the stories we’re sharing with you today.
This is not a comprehensive list of engaged people in our community. Like every list, this one is somewhat arbitrary and subjective. But make no mistake: this list is brimming with engagement.
This all started before Christmas, when my editors and I were talking about doing a retrospective of the big stories of 2012. Nostalgia is a lot of fun, but it can be a killer. Wouldn’t it be more interesting, I suggested, to look forward, to identify 13 people likely to have a breakout year in 2013. I had a few names in mind and asked my fellow reporters for help.
As the list grew, I decided that it didn’t matter whether these men and women had a breakout year, although surely many of them will. What matters is that they are all engaged in our community and show no signs of letting up.
I hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed writing it.
