“Tom is an elite product management leader who grounds himself in a deep understanding of the industry and customer context and uses that information to create and evolve products that meet the needs of buyers and users. A gifted product strategist in his own right, Tom is careful to build a team and mindshare with cross-functional leaders to drive progress. He does so with a tight grasp on the 'use case' fundamentals, a knack for creating compelling narratives, and a keen eye for improving product focus and features to match – especially in complex zero-to-one experiments and initiatives. Over three years in Google Health, I saw firsthand Tom's extraordinary skills in breaking through all the complexity and distractions, crisply articulating the situation or state of affairs, understanding the essence of a product, and aligning it to customer needs in a compelling way. Tom is affable, logical, incisive, poised, and patient, and is the steady hand and eloquent evangelist every organization hopes for in guiding product growth and success.”

What do you do if you want to make a meaningful impact as a late career Product Manager?
1. Deliver results. No one will care how long you've been a PM if you ship things that make KPI's go up and to the right. 2. Don't well on your time in the role. No one cares and you probably are getting in to your own head. Just focus on helping the team succeed and all else will fall into place. 3. Don't dwell on your pre-PM experience. It's easy to over index on your previous work. It will surely be helpful but just consider it useful but don't let it define you.

What do you do if your product manager's performance needs evaluation?
Ask the PM to do their own self-assessment. Then get input from your peers and their key stakeholders to make sure you have the whole story. Then set and communicate clear success measures that are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound). Then do everything you can to help the PM achieve them so they can turn things around and if not, so you know you gave them every opportunity to succeed. Then if they still aren't hitting their goals and you don't see a manageable path to helping doing it in the near future, help them find a new role.

Here's how you can navigate the impact of new technology on the role of a product manager.
Remember that new technology is a means to an end. Try to see how might we use it for our product but at the same time make sure it helps your users accomplish their goals faster and better. It's easy to go overboard and add tech where it doesn't make sense but just as easy to dismiss new tech and miss out on big opportunities to deliver step changes in value to your users.

What are the most common mistakes organizations make when prioritizing product road map features?
1. Not working on features that move the needle - mainly doing incremental bets or building features in search of user problems. 2. Not being clear about what the big features are in terms of the problem they're solving and unique insight that's driving it. 3. Underestimating complexity and time to complete resulting in a bunch of 40% done features. 4. Not paying down technical debt which catches up to you later. 5. Halfheartedly having and executing on features that an executive asked for and having them modestly succeed but no one knows why it wasn't a bigger hit.
