Job Summary

The Accountant role involves providing vital professional level accounting, budgetary, and financial support to various College operations and departments. Ensure fiscal compliance with all internal and external rules and regulations. Provide financial oversight and guidance for various academic and business operations, activities, and program accounts. The position entails performing departmental accounting services, with a primary focus on developing and monitoring accounting and internal control procedures and training appropriate department personnel on these procedures. Monitor compliance with financial related policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and established internal controls.

Developing and maintaining good public relations for all supported departments, as well as the Controller’s Office, is a key aspect of this position. This position will interact with multiple College departments, students, and external parties, resolving complex questions and problems.

In collaboration with the Controller’s Office team, the role involves strategic planning and development of goals that align with the College’s future needs. The position includes creating and analyzing reports, including performance metrics, trends, and projections, providing valuable insights for the office.

The role involves assisting with workload management and collaborating on complex matters with the Controller’s Office team. The position includes providing budget and data analysis, assisting in resolving financial problems, and helping design internal controls and procedures. Maintaining data integrity and assisting in audits is also a part of this role.

Essential Responsibilities And Duties

Provide accounting and financial/budget support for various assigned departments, including maintaining accounting ledgers for several separate funds. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of accounting entries, including verifying that all expected receipts, disbursements, assets, and liabilities are properly posted in the College’s accounting system. Identify errors and problems, propose solutions, and make appropriate journal entries. Maintain and oversee the integrity of any independent subsidiary accounting systems, ensuring these systems reconcile with the College’s main accounting system.

Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations for each assigned department. This analysis will be used to project future revenues and expenses, and to provide valuable advice for financial planning. Prepare comprehensive financial reports for each assigned department. These reports will detail assets, liabilities, profit and loss, and other financial activities within the department.

Assist in the preparation of departmental budgets. This involves working closely with the Budget Office to gather data, provide requested analysis, and make accurate projections. This comprehensive approach ensures a thorough understanding of the financial status and future outlook of each department the position supports.

Assist in the establishment of financial procedures and controls, and monitor their effectiveness to ensure they are operating as intended. Provide training, consultation, and advice to managers and others on the correct interpretation of data, application, and adherence to financial practices, rules, and regulations. Additionally, you will assist with internal audits of departments, ensuring compliance with financial practices and procedures. This includes reviewing financial records, identifying potential risks, and suggesting improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial operations.

  • Competence in preparing comprehensive financial reports and in organizing and scrutinizing data.
  • Familiarity with routine office procedures and competence in operating basic office machinery.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software suite: Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with a wide range of individuals within a community college setting, including students, faculty, and staff
  • Adaptability and a commitment to creating a supportive environment for all.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
