Job Description Summary

In this role, the Assistant Director, Personal and Career Development and Student Engagement, will be responsible for strategy and outreach to 100+ campus clubs, organizations, and on-campus employers with the goal of building and increasing engagement and relationships with students and student groups. The Assistant Director will also provide comprehensive college-to-career coaching services to students and alumni in one-on-one and group settings. The career coach will prepare and deliver workshops and programs and will complete a variety of projects on an as-needed basis. In addition, the Assistant Director will be responsible for teaching between 2 and 4 sections of the college-to-careers series during each academic year.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Provide specialized programs and workshops to departments, student organizations, Campus Life partners, and other key student groups with the goal of expanding students’ knowledge of opportunities, developing their ability to articulate their skills and the value of their major in the workplace, and to be career ready, willing, and able to act on their career development.
  • Provide strategic individual and group college-to-career transition coaching to WFU students, utilizing latest research and techniques from coaching, positive psychology, and appreciative inquiry. Coaching sessions may include conducting practice interviews, reviews of job search correspondence, review of LinkedIn profiles, and other personalized interactions.
  • Prepare for between 2 and 4 sections of the college-to-career courses series each year, teaching classes, engaging students, and providing feedback to students enrolled in each section.
  • Create handouts, webpages, and other collateral to support students in the college-to-career transition and educate them about the job market and the opportunities available.
  • Support Career Education and Coaching team in building positive relationships with faculty and academic departments.
  • Work with Career Education and Coaching team to design creative communication strategies with the goal of creating more positive student experience with OPCD.
  • Work with the Employer Relations team to identify key employers and opportunities and assist students making the transition to the world of work by identifying and promoting internships, full-time, part-time, and summer opportunities.
  • Assist Employer Relations team with events, special programming, and employer information sessions as appropriate.
  • Ensure activities in Handshake are tracked and updated in a timely manner and update other tracking mechanisms as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Master’s degree in counseling or related field, and one (1) year of experience in career development, human resources, or an equivalent setting providing career placement activities—or Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) years’ experience in career development, including counseling, educational programming, working with faculty and employers, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the job search process including resume-writing, business correspondence, career assessment tools, interviewing (including behavioral interviews) and the demands of high-level employers.
  • Understanding and appreciation of career coaching model. Familiarity with and use of action-oriented coaching models such as positive psychology and appreciative inquiry.

  • Candidate should be able to demonstrate creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial style.
  • Ability to conduct individual and small group coaching sessions.
  • Ability to develop and present creative and cutting-edge programming related to all aspects of the college-to-career process.
  • Experience with a liberal arts student population.
  • Experience in a work setting outside of academia.
  • Knowledge of social media, computer-based career assessment and recruiting tools and job search programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of current employment trends and student trends.
  • Ability to interact with students and other staff members to accomplish office goals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Strong initiative, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Responsible and independent nature: able to set goals and achieve them.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work occasional evening hours as needed.
