Essential Job Functions

Kirkland & Ellis is seeking an assistant to support the marketing and experience management efforts of the Firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) Litigation practice as part of the Business Development (BD) Department in our Chicago or New York office.

This role has a strong focus on the research and analysis of case documents, press releases, news items and information from a variety internal and external market intelligence and legal research platforms. You will need to be comfortable in an internal database environment and have the ability to convey complex information simply and concisely. You will serve as a valuable resource to the team and be responsible for the research, collection, database entry and maintenance of historical and current deal experience in a marketing-ready format.

We are looking for a self-starter and critical thinker with good judgment, excellent communication and analytical skills, strong intellectual curiosity and history of taking initiative. You will possess excellent organizational and project management skills, outstanding editing and proofing skills, the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment, strong attention to detail and a professional and polished demeanor. You should be able to work independently while also collaborating with the team when needed. You should possess a willingness and desire to learn new things, including quickly developing a general understanding of the various types of IP litigation.

You will report to the BD Director for Intellectual Property in Chicago with additional reporting to the BD Director of Marketing Experience Management in Chicago and the BD Specialist for Intellectual Property in New York and work closely with other team members. You will also communicate and collaborate regularly with a global team of approximately 160 diverse problem-solvers and advisers dedicated to the broader BD, marketing and communications efforts of the Firm. Kirkland’s international BD team provides seamless service to our attorneys with a focus on quality, innovation and responsiveness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Engage in thoughtful, comprehensive research of the Firm’s IP litigation across a wide breadth of industries, courts and matters types using a variety of internal and external resources, including Docket Navigator, Lex Machina, Monitor Suite, PACER and others.
  • Maintain the integrity of litigation data through regular database audits.
  • Compile, interpret, analyze and export data in relation to requests from multiple stakeholders and departments.
  • Review pitches, survey responses, award nominations and directory submissions for updates to litigation experience and incorporate into the experience database.
  • Proactively communicate with members of the IP BD team to identify enhancements and use cases of the experience management database.
  • Document processes and procedures for the experience management database.

Other Functions

  • Assist with various other marketing initiatives that intersect with other functional areas within the marketing context
  • Any other functions/duties as assigned by management.

Required

  • Meticulous data entry, writing and proofing skills and a general facility for learning new software.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with high-level attorneys, clients, staff and guests of the Firm.
  • Ability to take initiative, adapt to change and work independently in high-pressure, deadline-driven scenarios while exercising sound judgment and making intelligent, informed decisions.
  • Ability to synthesize data, complex financial and legal concepts and accurately capture ideas and themes in a narrative.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and execute a diverse range of tasks with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity, weigh options and find ways to move initiatives forward to meet critical deadlines and produce results.
  • Collaborative approach to working within a team, including the ability to take direction and implement feedback.
  • Ability to thrive in an electronic environment and utilize technology to deliver information. Proficiency in methods of information acquisition, including the use of online information databases, tools and resources.
  • Solid command of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint).
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred

  • At least two years of experience in a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Experience with marketing database software or experience tracking (e.g., Content Pilot).
  • Working knowledge market intelligence/legal research platforms, including Docket Navigator, Lex Machina, Monitor Suite and PACER.
