Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Career Counseling Advisor in the Attorney Recruiting & Development department, reporting to the Director of Career Counseling & Planning.


The role can reside in either the New York or Washington, DC office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for providing support to current associates and advisors through one-on-one career counseling and coaching sessions and related programming. Akin’s Career Counseling & Coaching program is responsible for providing coaching and counseling to all Akin attorneys and advisors globally. The Career Counseling Advisor will be the second coach in the program being fully supported by the Director, who will still be providing senior level direct coaching and counseling, and co-facilitating supporting programming with the Advisor.


Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Coaching associates on topics including career development and success, career planning, leadership, soft-skills, management/wellness and behavioral change. Engagements range from micro-coaching to long-term engagements
  • Creating and co-facilitating training programs
  • Providing ongoing outreach and marketing of counseling program within Akin through written content, virtually and in-person
  • Building out integration plan programming for new attorneys
  • Orientating fall/NQ and lateral associates on Akin’s career counseling program
  • Creating and managing a database, data analysis and reporting on trends
  • Building coaching into Akin Advisors mentoring program
  • Coaching groups for particular cohorts of attorneys, including supporting Akin’s DEI initiatives
  • Willingness to travel intermittently
  • Additional tasks and projects as needed


Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Coaching certification or equivalent required
  • Career coaching or counseling experience required; 4+ years of experience in the legal, professional services, law schools, higher education or recruiting and executive search industry
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Juris Doctor or other advanced degree a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and objective reasoning
  • Ability to inspire trust and exercise discretion, confidentiality, exemplary judgment and tact
  • Willingness to provide both junior level coaching support and high-level administrative support
  • Empathetic listener and creative problem-solver
  • Ability to demonstrate strategic business acumen and results focus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with database applications
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness and ability to assume new tasks and responsibilities


The base salary range for this position in New York and Washington, DC is $120,000 to $170,000. Additional information about benefits and rewards can be found here.
