Overview

Job Summary

Administers medical physics and radiation safety programs. Develops radiation protection policy and procedures for those facilities utilizing ionizing radiation and radioactive material. Ensures facility compliance with applicable State and Federal regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Functions as liaison between the System and State and Federal Agencies (NC Radiation Protection Section, NRC, EPA, OSHA, and JCAHO) for matters pertaining to radiation safety, radioactive materials and ionizing radiation.
  • Orders, receives, and distributes personnel monitoring devices for the Medical Center.
  • Prepares and submits monthly analysis of personnel monitoring reports to individuals and department supervisors.
  • Investigates and reports, incidents, recordable events, non-compliance and overexposures involving ionizing radiation or radioactive material to the Isotope Usage and Radiation Safety Committee and State as required by regulation.
  • Trains pregnant radiation workers and their supervisors regarding safety and exposure during term of declared pregnancy and calculates fetal and patient radiation dose estimates upon request of physician.
  • Provides education and counseling to the patient and referring physician as appropriate.
  • Calculates patient doses upon request (X-Ray, Nuclear Medicine).
  • Oversees applications, renewals, and amendments to Licenses/Permits involving Radioactive Material and ionizing radiation producing equipment (Linear Accelerator, Cyclotron, X-Ray, Broad Scope license, accelerator license, X-Ray registrations, Nuclear Medicine license, Radiopharmacy license).
  • Supervises the shipping and receipt of radioactive materials at facilities.
  • Performs acceptance and quality control tests and oversees Nuclear Medicine and Radiopharmacy equipment quality assurance programs.

Physical Requirements

Work for this position is performed in all facilities utilizing ionization radiation and radioactive material. Majority of work time requires taking measurements and writing reports.

Education, Experience And Certifications

Master's Degree in Medical Physics or Health Physics required. Experience in management of Medical Broad Scope Radioactive materials license required. Training and experience in quality assurance for Diagnostic Radiology (x-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound) required. Training or experience with reactor emergencies, cyclotron accelerators, medical lasers and radiation oncology required. Knowledge and experience with personal computers, spreadsheets, database management systems and word processors required. ABHP and/or ABR certification or board eligible required.
