Description & Requirements

The Director, Computational R&D, will lead a team that develops novel computational methods to accelerate discovery, provide new insights, facilitate biomarker identification, assess the quality of molecular methods and associated data, and create new paradigms for the analysis of high complexity multiomic datasets. The Director will build and maintain an industry-leading team producing methods that can be run as a service, be out-licensed or included in collaborative studies, and be published in high impact articles. The methods will additionally generate Intellectual Property (IP) that contributes to product development.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Leads a team of computer science researchers, software engineers, data scientists, and computational biologists to develop novel computational methods in the genomics/multi-omics space meeting the goals described above.

Collaborates with cross-domain experts to identify and address key community needs and directions in the field.

Leverages domain-specific knowledge and the latest advances in AI and computing hardware to build new solutions (to old and new problems) that are scalable, efficient, and extensible.

Co-designs “full-stack” molecular assay and computational products in collaboration with the Genomics Platform’s Methods Development and R&D teams.

As a member of the Genomics Platform extended leadership team, ensures the goals and output of the Computational Methods R&D team align with GP’s strategy, product roadmaps, and quarterly goals.

Works closely with the GP Informatics team to ensure seamless implementation & integration of novel methods with GP’s production data delivery software tools.

Develops team members to ensure the long term sustainability and success of the team; ensures the team is integrated to GP, its goals and culture.

Attracts and secures funding from federal awards, collaborations, contracts, philanthropy, services, etc.

Qualifications

PhD in Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related field

At least 12 years relevant experience (computer science, computational methods, computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, analysis of genomic data)

At least 5 years relevant leadership experience including managerial responsibilities and team leadership

Excellent oral and written English communication skills

Advanced computer science, statistics, -omic data analysis, and computational methods skills

Ability to solve complex problems individually and as part of a team
