About The Position

The Milken Institute is seeking a Director, Institutional Giving to support the Milken Institute’s Business and Program Development Programmatic Fundraising team, focused on foundation, corporate, and government grants. For the candidate with strong intellectual curiosity, extraordinary work ethic and drive to achieve, this is an opportunity to work with the Institute’s programmatic pillars and become a key player in an entrepreneurial, growing and dynamic organization involved in some of the most important issues.

The Director, Institutional Giving of Business & Program Development is responsible for the growth and stewardship of the grants portfolio supporting Milken Institute’s pillars in health, finance, and philanthropy. This position works closely with programmatic Pillar teams, business development, and colleagues across the Milken Institute to foster productive relationships with funders to expand the organization’s network, reach, resources, and social impact.

In addition, this role coordinates with the Business & Program Development team in Santa Monica on planning, support, and execution of Milken Institute-wide development strategy to meet goals across its public platforms, including the annual Global Conference, the Future of Health Summit and other regional summits.

Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Initiate and steward relationships with institutional funders in alignment with Institute pillar and program focus areas, including health, finance, and philanthropy.
  • Develop and effectively articulate the value proposition for program support, including:
  • Identifying prospects across the foundation and government sectors
  • Developing written and oral proposals
  • Conducting and expeditiously closing solicitations
  • Managing sponsor/funder acknowledgment and retention
  • Maintaining CRM (Salesforce)
  • Lead on the operational management of the Programmatic Fundraising team’s strategy in collaboration with Pillar leads, which may include:
  • Execution on high-level donor deliverables such as coordination of key stakeholders, roundtables, business council meetings, prospecting events, and event sponsorship, as relevant
  • Researching and closing new funding opportunities and larger partnerships for programmatic support
  • Collaborating with Programmatic Fundraising team leadership on long-range and strategic planning to set the execution plan of budget and fundraising goal for the programmatic pillars of the Milken Institute
  • Coordinating the creation and tracking of proposals, agreements, and invoices
  • Manage leaders on the Programmatic Fundraising team with distinct portfolios and fundraising goals.
  • Communicate across teams to ensure an effective and timely dissemination of information about new & existing funding relationships.
  • Support the fundraising strategy of Milken Institute platform events, including the annual Future of Health Summit and other key programmatic convenings.
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidates Should Possess The Following Characteristics

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience fundraising for non-profit programs, projects and/or events. Management experience a plus.
  • Track record of successfully cultivating and closing funding
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proven project management and leadership skill set
  • Effective public speaking and presentation skills small meeting setting or with large audiences
  • Ability to remain proactive, level-headed, highly organized, and detail-oriented across multiple areas of focus
  • Flexibility to take on new opportunities, expand portfolio and adapt to internal and external environment
  • Multitasker able to handle complex projects in a fast-paced environment, requiring ability to effectively prioritize and respond promptly to internal and external communications
  • Innovative problem-solver who can generate workable solutions and resolve issues
  • Motivated self-starter displaying high productivity and follow-through in all areas of responsibility
  • Strong ability to work with people and interact positively with all levels of an organization
  • Flexibility to travel as needed for meetings and events and to work across various time zones around the world
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and ability to quickly learn CRM (Salesforce experience a plus)

Working Conditions & Travel Requirements

This position will work in a professional office environment. This person will also be required to travel occasionally to other offices and/or venues to assist with events as needed, requiring occasional work outside of traditional hours. International along with domestic travel is possible. Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.

This position will work a hybrid schedule consisting of three (3) days per week reporting in-person to your respective office location (Tuesday – Thursday), with the remaining two (2) days working remotely. Please understand, this schedule is subject to change in the Institute’s sole discretion.
