Loyal

Director, People Business Partner

Loyal San Francisco, CA

About Loyal

Loyal is a clinical-stage veterinary medicine company developing drugs intended to extend the lifespan and healthspan of dogs. In other words, our mission is to help dogs live longer, healthier lives.

We've already achieved significant milestones on our path to gaining FDA approval for the first lifespan extension drug for any species. We have three products in our pipeline and are on track to bring the first product to market in 2025.

Loyal is a well-funded startup in growth mode. Our team includes scientists, veterinarians, engineers, operators, and creatives. This role will play a key role in supporting our growth strategies.

About the role

Loyal is less than 12 months away from the projected launch of our first product. We're seeking an experienced Director, People Business Partner to drive our talent and performance development strategies across teams at Loyal. This person will work 1:1 with our managers to guide and coach them to build high performing teams.

You will be reporting to our Chief People + Communications Officer, Cheryl Heinonen.

Your daily work will include:

  • Serve as a strategic partner to management, providing guidance and support on People-related matters.
  • Be a Culture Coach for the organization helping to build our leader/manager skills.
  • Provide coaching and support to managers and employees on employee relations issues, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions.
  • Partner with team members in People Ops to conduct performance management processes, including performance reviews, goal setting, and development planning.
  • Provide input on talent acquisition strategy and organizational development.
  • Collaborate with the team to analyze People metrics and trends, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions.
  • Stay current on employment best practices and legal requirements to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.

About you:

  • 8+ years of experience as an HRBP, preferably with learning & development experience.
  • Extensive HR Business Partner experience working with multiple client groups to navigate the complex needs of dynamic teams.
  • A strong bias towards action, using limited resources to execute and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative and friendly working style that can adapt to the different ways our teams work.
  • Compassionate and proactive about helping others grow in their career development.
  • Adaptability, creativity and high-performer in risk-assessment and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to quickly learn new concepts and processes.
  • Professional and clear communicator with the ability to distill out the important information for relevant stakeholders no matter how complex the scenario.
  • Strong eye for detail and documentation practices.

While not required, we'd be especially excited if you:

  • Have worked closely or within a Learning & Development team, with exposure to building company-wide team development programs.
  • Have experience working in a fully-remote environment.
  • Love dogs or animals in general.

Why you might not like this role:

  • This is a fast-paced, rapidly-scaling startup environment.
  • We may be comfortable with more ambiguity and uncertainty than you are accustomed to, as we like to test hypotheses early. You'll need to be comfortable taking full responsibility for your area of expertise, with support and guidance from the rest of the team and company.
  • You'll need to be comfortable adapting to change, and operating in a fast-paced, highly-regulated environment.
  • You'll need to be creative in solving problems, especially those without precedent.
  • We continually find ways to enhance remote working and communication.

What you will gain from this role:

  • Experience the launch of a first-of-its-kind drug to market.
  • A working environment that is positive, kind, thoughtful, and full of some of the smartest people in the industry.
  • Experience building process and doing impactful work on how we scale up team performance.
