The Department of Economic Research (DER) is seeking a talented and motivated Economist to join its dynamic and growing team as part of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Current Employment Statistics (CES) program. This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in analyzing critical economic data, informing sound policy decisions, and shaping the future of the Commonwealth.

In This Role, You Will

  • Analyze and interpret complex economic data to provide deep insights into employment trends, industry outlooks, and labor market dynamics within Massachusetts.
  • Develop and implement innovative methods for data collection and analysis, ensuring the department remains at the forefront of economic research.
  • Collaborate with policymakers and stakeholders to translate economic data into clear and actionable intelligence.
  • Conduct research and write reports on key economic indicators, emerging trends, and the potential impact of various policy initiatives.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the CES program to maximize its effectiveness in informing economic policy and workforce development strategies.

You Will Thrive In This Role If You Possess

  • Strong analytical skills and experience in data analysis using Excel and statistical software, especially R.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex economic concepts into clear and concise language for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the field of economics, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions

I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in economics may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*

II. A Graduate degree with a major in economics may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required experience.*

III. A Bachelor's or higher degree with major other than in economics may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
