Position Summary
Mirum is seeking an Executive Director, Global Patient Advocacy to support the company’s rare disease franchises. This person will build upon the strong trusted and credible relationships already established while setting the vision for creating Mirum’s best-in-class patient advocacy organization. This role will champion the patient and caregiver voice, liaise between patient communities and cross-functional partners at Mirum, and gather insights from all stakeholders to support the needs of patients and their families as well as the Mirum business. The position will be based in Foster City, California.

Position Summary
Mirum is seeking an Executive Director, Global Patient Advocacy to support the company’s rare disease franchises. This role will champion the patient and caregiver voice, liaise between patient communities and cross-functional partners at Mirum, and gather insights from all stakeholders to support the needs of patients and their families as well as the Mirum business. The position will be based in Foster City, California.
Job Functions/Responsibilities
- Develop and implement global patient advocacy strategy and build the mission aligned team, partnering closely with patient advocacy groups (PAGs), internal partners and key external stakeholders to achieve mutual organizational goals.
- Lead the patient advocacy team with ongoing assessment on the strategy, tactics and initiatives across key markets based on patient needs, while ensuring proactive engagement with community.
- Ensure that the experiences and needs of patients are a key component of evaluating business development and indication expansion opportunities.
- Maintain strong presence and representation at patient advocacy events and conferences as well as scientific congresses to foster key connections with essential stakeholders.
- Attend and represent Mirum at advocacy conferences, medical congresses, and other events where there is an opportunity for patient engagement.
- Partner cross functionally throughout the organization including clinical development, commercial, corporate communications, medical affairs, regulatory affairs and R&D teams to ensure patient advocacy organization and cross-functional team insights are incorporated into programs, decision-making and communications.
- Responsible for implementing best practices and anticipate impact on the patient and advocacy landscape to benefit company development and commercial objectives as well as the patient community.
- Define engagement plans for each PAG, to include clinical development recruitment activities, messaging, patient-friendly materials, programs such as community surveys, and outreach channels.
- Champion team who serves as a liaison between PAGs and the Grants Review Committee for any funding or sponsorship requests throughout the year.
- Stay apprised of regional compliance regulations and policies to ensure proper, appropriate engagement with PAGs.
- Support team planning and budgeting as well as management of agencies, partners and vendors, as required.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree a bonus).
- 15+ years of progressive pharmaceutical/biotechnology experience with 12+ years of global patient advocacy/ relevant professional experience (experience in a competitive space a plus).
- Rare disease experience preferred.
- Strong leadership skills and organizational planning skills, with experience defining the vision for the patient advocacy function including; strategic planning and supporting the development and growth of team members.
- Track record required of building and leading high functioning and collaborative teams.
- Flexible, adaptable, diplomatic, and able to effectively deal with ambiguity.
- Possesses a good blend of strategic and operational experience with the aptitude to see the big picture and strong attention to detail.
- Persuasive communication skills with the ability to effectively present ideas, get buy-in and drive consensus within the commercial organization and across project teams.
- Ability to collect, synthesize, and present data to leadership and across the organization.
- Previous experience working successfully with global patient advocacy groups.
- Desire and willingness to conduct primary project work as well as to manage through a team.
- Competency to fiercely prioritize, work well in ambiguity, be decisive, manage time, and be forward thinking.
- Ability to anticipate and resolve problems effectively.
- Proven leader motivates team members; fosters and nurtures teamwork.
- Must be willing to travel (approximately 50%) both domestic and internationally.
