Position Summary

The GIS Specialist, reporting to the Science Director for Audubon Americas, plays a crucial role in executing and overseeing a range of science activities vital to the program. This role involves providing essential spatial analysis and mapping support for Audubon Americas (AA) strategies and projects. The Specialist is responsible for managing the Impact and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) system of AA, as well as compiling and structuring biological and geographical databases. Additionally, they actively participate in analyses to identify spatial priorities for implementing the program’s initiatives across Latin America and the Caribbean, along with various other assigned analyses. The role also encompasses creating and managing ArcGIS applications, as well as advising, and supervising their development by contractors. As part of monitoring activities, the specialist captures drone imagery of project sites and regions. This dynamic position requires a multifaceted skill set to deliver key products, including updated KPIs dashboards and quarterly reports, web mapping applications and static maps of the program's spatial priorities, harmonized databases, orthomosaic maps of drone imagery, StoryMaps for specific projects, and peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.

Essential Functions

• Manage, maintain, and update the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) database, generating quarterly reports.
• Compile and structure geographical and biological datasets critical for program operations.
• Perform spatial analyses to identify priority sites and landscapes for the Audubon Americas program, offering valuable insights.
• Aid in grant and report writing efforts, contributing to the effective communication of project activities and impact.
• Actively contribute to developing conservation blueprints, as strategic frameworks for conservation initiatives.
• Execute drone flights to capture aerial images of project sites and regions, processing them to create integrated orthomosaic maps.
• Develop ArcGIS-based applications, such as interactive online maps, dashboards, presentation maps, quick analysis and StoryMaps, and oversee their development by others, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
• Offer vital spatial analysis and mapping support to facilitate the implementation of Audubon Americas (AA) strategies.
• Present to external audiences on relevant data processes and findings.
• Publish harmonized databases, as well as scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
• Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

Qualifications And Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Geography, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Possess 3-5 years, or more, of professional experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
• Demonstrated proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) as well as in R or Python programming environments
• Exhibit strong expertise in geospatial data analysis, mapping, and cartography.
• Desirable experience in structuring and managing geographic and biological databases and standards.
• Ability to develop scripts or applications for the automation of GIS and data processing tasks.
• Familiarity with remote sensing technologies and interpretation of satellite imagery. Earth Engine knowledge is a plus.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for interpreting and analyzing geographic data.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus. Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Capability to create clear and visually appealing maps and presentations.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to maintain accountability for work products.
• English and Spanish proficiency (written and oral) required.
• Interest in conservation and passion for the mission of the National Audubon Society a must.
