The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST LEAD


WORK SCHEDULE

  • 40 hours per week

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Develop and evaluate methodologies, reagents and procedures
  • Evaluates the performance of fellow residents, students and staff
  • Oversees the correction of erroneous Immunology results. Ensures that providers are informed of corrected results, technologists are informed of errors they have made


REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience

AND

  • Medial Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent, or certification with a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division

AND

  • Two years of professional experience including at least one year as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, including Harborview Medical Center and at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions, and also including an anticipated central lab location (Renton, WA) when scheduled.
  • Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.


PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Finds errors and their corrections have been documented according to policy, and that the supervisor and directors are aware of serious errors. Consults with supervisor and/or directors to alter processes to reduce the risk of errors.
  • Provide daily leadership in the section they are assigned and provide guidance as issue arise.
  • Establish policies pertaining to the areas they are assigned to oversee and insures appropriate QA protocols and policies are followed by all staff.
  • Communicates with supervisor and/or faculty about the ongoing operation of the section, and keeps them informed of important issues.
  • Maintains the theoretical and technical expertise for all procedures within assigned section.
  • Oversees preventive maintenance schedule and assigns PM tasks as needed.
  • Understands laboratory regulatory requirements (e.g. CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, etc.), works with the supervisor and directors to ensure that these requirements are met. Prepares for and participates in inspections by regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for ensuring that maintenance contracts are up to date and that the companies involved in the performance of these contracts do fulfill them.
  • Oversees Proficiency Testing (including Biannual Verification), AMR validation, and new reagent testing, ensuring that all regulatory requirements are met.
  • Responsible for training of new MLS staff in the Immunology Lab, and the training of current MLS staff and all the planning that goes into it
  • Works with the supervisor to assess and document the competency of staff in the Immunology Lab and provide feedback
  • Interacts with researchers who have requested fee for service laboratory testing, schedules research testing, oversees the reporting of results and submission of billing.
  • Answers questions from providers about testing performed in the Clinical Immunology Lab.
  • With delegated authority, the lead authorizes overtime activities by staff working in the Immunology Lab.
  • Is familiar with Departmental “Environment of Care” Policies, patient confidentiality protocols, CQI policies, policies and procedures regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace.
  • Perform cost assessment for clinical and research testing done within the Immunology Lab.
  • Able to perform all the duties of the MLS1 or MLS2 as needed
